പഴയ സിലോണിൽ(ശ്രീലങ്ക) ജനിച്ച ചിന്തകനും, കലാചരിത്രപണ്ഡിതനും, വ്യാഖ്യാതാവും ആയിരുന്നു ആനന്ദകുമാരസ്വാമി.(Tamil: ஆனந்த குமாரசுவாமி,ജ:22 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 1877 − 9 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 1947) ഇന്ത്യൻ കലാചരിത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും,ഭാരതീയസൗന്ദര്യശാസ്ത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും പാശ്ചാത്യർക്കു അറിവുനൽകിയ ആദ്യകാലപണ്ഡിതന്മാരിലൊരാളാണ് അദ്ദേഹം..ആനന്ദ കെന്റിഷ് കുമാരസ്വാമി എന്നതായിരുന്നു മുഴുവൻ പേർ.മാതാപിതാക്കൾ സിലോണിലെ തമിഴ് വംശജനായ നിയമസഭാസാമാജികനും, ചിന്തകനുമായ സർ മുത്തു കുമാരസ്വാമിയും, ഇംഗ്ലീഷുകാരിയായ എലിസബത്ത് ബീബിയുമായിരുന്നു. 1947 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 9ന്നു യു.എസിലെ നീധാമിൽ വെച്ചു നിര്യാതനായി.

വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം

പിതാവിന്റെ മരണത്തെത്തുടർന്നു ആനന്ദ വളർന്നതും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ചെയ്തതും വിദേശത്തായിരുന്നു. 1900-ൽ ലണ്ടൻ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്നു ഭൗമശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും,സസ്യശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും ബിരുദം നേടി. തുടർന്നു 1902 മുതൽ 1906 വരെ നടത്തിയ സിലോണിലെ ധാതുക്കളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനത്തിൽ ഡോക്റ്റർ ഓഫ് സയൻസ് ബിരുദവും നേടുകയുണ്ടായി. സിലോൺ ഭൗമ സർവ്വേയുടെ ചുമതലയും അദ്ദേഹം വഹിയ്ക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ തന്നെയാണ് ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫറായ ഭാര്യയുടെ സഹായത്തോടെ മദ്ധ്യകാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ സിംഹളകലയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഗ്രന്ഥം രചിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. പാശ്ചാത്യവിരുദ്ധചിന്തകൾ ആനന്ദയിൽ ദൃഡമാകുന്നതിനു ഈ പുസ്തകം കാരണമായി.
