ആഫ്രിക്ക, മഡഗാസ്കർ, ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ, ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ ഏഷ്യ, ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ വ്യാപകമായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ചെറിയസസ്യമാണ് പൊങ്ങത്തി (Sphenoclea zeylanica).[3] തെക്കൻ യുണൈറ്റഡ് സ്റ്റേറ്റ്സ് മുതൽ വടക്കൻ അർജന്റീന വരെയുള്ള ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും വ്യാപകമായി എത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.[2] ഇതിന്റെ ഇളം ഇലകൾ ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമാണ്, ചിലപ്പോൾ ചെറുതായി തിളപ്പിച്ചും കഴിക്കാറുണ്ട്.[3] നെൽവയലിലെ ഒരു സാധാരണ കളയായ ഇത് 25 മുതൽ 50% വരെ വിളവ് നഷ്ടപ്പെടാൻ ഇടയാകാറുണ്ട്.[4]
