കാണ്ടാമൃഗങ്ങളിൽ ഒരിനമാണ് സുമാത്രൻ കാണ്ടാമൃഗം അഥവാ സുമാത്രൻ റൈനോസറസ് (ശാസ്ത്രീയനാമം: Dicerorhinus sumatrensis). ഇവ ഗുരുതരമായ വംശനാശഭീഷണി നേരിടുന്നു എന്ന് ഐ.യു.സി.എന്റെ കണക്കുകൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു[2]. കച്ചവടതാത്പര്യങ്ങൾക്കായി കൊമ്പുകൾ മുറിച്ചെടുക്കാൻ നിരവധി സുമാത്രൻ കാണ്ടാമൃഗങ്ങളെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കിയതിനാൽ ഇന്ന് നിലവിലുള്ള സുമാത്രൻ കാണ്ടാമൃഗങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം നൂറിൽത്താഴെ മാത്രമാണ്.[5] മൃഗശാലകളിലും മറ്റും സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് പത്തെണ്ണം മാത്രം. രണ്ടു കൊമ്പുകളുള്ള ഇവ വലിപ്പം കൊണ്ട് ഏറ്റവും ചെറിയ ഇനമാണ്. കണക്കുപ്രകാരം 275 എണ്ണം മാത്രമാണ് ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്[2]. പരമാവധി 1000 കിലോഗ്രാം വരെ ഭാരം വയ്ക്കുന്നു. ഇവയ്ക്ക് ചുവന്ന ബ്രൗൺ നിറമാണ്. മൺ മറഞ്ഞുപോയ വൂളി റൈനോസേഴ്സ് ആണ് ഇവയുമായി ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത ബന്ധം ഉള്ള കാണ്ടാമൃഗം.
