മട്ടപോണി (English: /ˌmætəpoʊˈnaɪ/[1]) ഗോത്രം കോമൺവെൽത്ത് ഓഫ് വിർജീനിയയിൽ കോളോണിയൽ കാലഘട്ടംമുതൽക്കുതന്നെ സംവരണ പ്രദേശം ലഭിച്ച രണ്ട് വിർജീനിയൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ[2] ഗോത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ്. ഇതിൽ വലിയ മട്ടപോണി ഇന്ത്യൻ വർഗ്ഗം വിർജീനിയയിൽ വെസ്റ്റ് പോയിന്റിനു സമീപം മട്ടപോണി നദിയുടെ അതിരുകൾക്കുടനീളമായി സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന കിങ് വില്ല്യം കൗണ്ടിയിലെ സംവരണ പ്രദേശത്താണ് അധിവസിക്കുന്നത്.[3][4]
പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ചീഫ് പൗവാട്ടന്റെ പാരമ്പര്യത്തിന്റെ തുടർച്ചയായുള്ള ആറു ഗോത്രങ്ങളിലൊന്നായിരുന്നു ഇത്.[5] പോവറ്റാൻ ചീഫിനു കീഴിലെ മറ്റ് അംഗങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ ഒരു അൽ‌ഗോങ്കിയൻ ഭാഷയാണ് ഈ ഗോത്രത്തിലെ ജനങ്ങൾ സംസാരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. 1607 ൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷുകാർ എത്തിച്ചേരുകയും ജയിംസ് ടൌണിൽ കുടിയേറുകയും ചെയ്ത കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ പൗവാട്ടന്റെ പ്രബലമായ ഗോത്ര കൂട്ടായ്മയിൽ 30 ഓളം ഗോത്രങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നതായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.[6]
ഇതുകൂടാതെ, ഒരു മട്ടപോണി ബാന്റ് സംവരണ പ്രദേശത്തിന് പുറത്തായി, മട്ടപോണി നദിയുടെ ഉന്നതഭാഗത്തെ സംയോജിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടാത്ത ആഡംസ്ടൌൺ എന്നു പേരുള്ള കുഗ്രാമത്തിൽ കാലങ്ങളായി അധിവസിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇതൊരു ഇന്ത്യൻ പ്രദേശമായി പതിനേഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ രേഖകളിൽ തിരിച്ചറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. 1921 ൽ ആഡംസ്ടൌണിലെ ഈ അപ്പർ മട്ടപോണി ഗോത്രവർഗം ഔദ്യോഗിക സമൂഹമായി സംഘടിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുകയുണ്ടായി. വെർജീനിയയിലെ കോമൺവെൽത്ത് ഓഫ് വിർജീനിയ ഒരു ഗോത്രമായി അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഇവർക്ക് ഹാനോവർ കൗണ്ടിയിൽ 32 ഏക്കർ (130,000 m2) പ്രദേശം കൈവശത്തിലുണ്ട്.[7][8] 2018 ജനുവരി 12 ന് പാസാക്കിയ 2017 ലെ തോമസിന ഇ. ജോർഡൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ ട്രൈബ്സ് ഓഫ് വിർജീനിയ ഫെഡറൽ റെക്കഗ്നിഷൻ ആക്ട് പ്രകാരം അപ്പർ മട്ടപോണി ഗോത്രത്തിന് ഫെഡറൽ പദവി നൽകപ്പെട്ടു.[9]
ഫെഡറൽ അംഗീകാരം ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള പമൻസ്കി ഇന്ത്യക്കാരുടെ ഒരു ശാഖയായിട്ടാണ് മട്ടപോണി ഇന്ത്യക്കാരെ തരം തിരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. മട്ടപോണി, പമൻസ്കി ഇന്ത്യൻ വർഗ്ഗങ്ങൾക്ക് സമാനമായ ഒരു സാംസ്കാരിക അടിത്തറയുണ്ട് എന്നതുപോലെതന്നെ ഒരേ ചരിത്രപരമായ രാഷ്ട്രീയ സംവിധാനത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് അവർ എത്തിയത്.[10]
