പ്രമുഖ അമേരിക്കൻ വ്യവസായിയും നിക്ഷേപകൻ, ജീവകാരുണ്യ പ്രവർത്തകൻ, എഴുത്തുകാരൻ എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ പ്രശസ്തനുമായ ഒരു ബഹുമുഖപ്രതിഭയാണ് ജോർജ് സോറോസ്. ഹംഗേറിയൻ-ജൂത പാരമ്പര്യമുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഹംഗേറിയൻ അമേരിക്കൻ പൗരത്വങ്ങളുണ്ട്[3]. ബുഡാപെസ്റ്റിൽ ഒരു ജൂത കുടുംബത്തിൽ ജനിച്ച സോറോസ്, നാസി അധിനിവേശത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് 1947-ൽ യുണൈറ്റഡ് കിംഗ്ഡത്തിലേക്ക് മാറി. ലണ്ടൻ സ്‌കൂൾ ഓഫ് ഇക്കണോമിക്‌സിൽ പഠിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം തത്ത്വചിന്തയിൽ ബിരുദവും (1951) തത്ത്വചിന്തയിൽ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദവും (1954) നേടി. [4][5]. സോറോസ് ഫണ്ട് മാനേജ്മെന്റിന്റെ അദ്ധ്യക്ഷനായ അദ്ദേഹം ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും സമ്പന്നരായ മുപ്പത് പേരിൽ ഒരാളാണ്[6].

ഹംഗറിയിലെ ബുഡാപെസ്റ്റിൽ ഒരു സമ്പന്നകുടുംബത്തിലാണ് ജോർജ്ജ് സോറോസ് ജനിക്കുന്നത്. അക്കാലത്തെ ഹംഗേറിയൻ ജൂതന്മാർ പൊതുവെ തങ്ങളുടെ ജൂതപാരമ്പര്യം പുറത്തുകാണിക്കാറില്ലായിരുന്നു. ജൂത ആചാരങ്ങളിൽ വിമുഖരായിരുന്നു ജോർജ്ജ് സോറോസിന്റെയും കുടുംബം. ജൂത ആന്റിസെമിറ്റിക് കുടുംബം എന്ന് ജോർജ്ജ് തമാശയായി തന്റെ കുടുംബത്തെ പരാമർശിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പിതാവായ തിവാഡർ സോറോസ് (തിയഡോറോ ഷ്വാർസ്) അഭിഭാഷകനും എസ്പെരാന്തോ ഭാഷയിലെ എഴുത്തുകാരനുമായിരുന്നു[7]. ലിറ്ററാച്ചുറ മോൺഡോ എന്ന പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണത്തിന്റെ പത്രാധിപൻ കൂടിയായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം മകനേയും ഈ ഭാഷ പരിശീലിപ്പിച്ചു[8]. ഒന്നാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധകാലത്ത് തടവിലായിരുന്ന തിവാഡർ, റഷ്യയിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെട്ട് ബുഡാപെസ്റ്റിലെത്തുകയായിരുന്നു[9][10]. മാതാവ് എർസബെറ്റ് (എലിസബത്ത്) പട്ടുവ്യാപാരരംഗത്ത് സജീവമായിരുന്നു[11]. 1924-ലാണ് എർസബെറ്റും തിവാഡറും വിവാഹിതരാകുന്നത്. 1936-ലാണ് തന്റെ കുടുംബനാമം ഷ്വാർസ് എന്ന ജൂതചുവയുള്ളതിൽനിന്ന് സോറോസ് എന്ന് മാറ്റുന്നത്. ഹംഗറിയിൽ അന്ന് വർദ്ധിച്ചുവന്ന സെമിറ്റിക് വിരുദ്ധതയിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെടാനായാണ് ഇങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തത്.
