ഒട്ടാഗോ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിലെ പാത്തോളജി പ്രൊഫസറാണ് ക്രിസ്റ്റീൻ കോയ് വിന്റർബോൺ. ജൈവ രസതന്ത്രത്തിലെ ഫ്രീ റാഡിക്കലുകളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഗവേഷണം ക്രിസ്റ്റീന് 2011ലെ റഥർഫോർഡ് മെഡൽ നേടിക്കൊടുത്തു.[1] [2] ഇതു കൂടാതെ ഈ ഗവേഷണത്തിന് മാർസ്ഡെൻ മെഡലും ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1970 ൽ ഒട്ടാഗോ സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ക്രൈസ്റ്റ്ചർച്ച് മെഡിക്കൽ സ്‌കൂളിൽ സ്ഥാനം നേടുന്നതിനുമുമ്പ് വിന്റർബോൺ ബയോകെമിസ്ട്രിയിൽ പിഎച്ച്ഡി ചെയ്തു. മനുഷ്യകോശങ്ങൾ അവയുടെ സാധാരണ പ്രവർത്തനത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി ഫ്രീ റാഡിക്കലുകളെ ഉൽ‌പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്നുവെന്നും കാൻസർ, സ്ട്രോക്ക്, കൊറോണറി ഹാർട്ട് ഡിസീസ്, ആർത്രൈറ്റിസ് തുടങ്ങിയ രോഗങ്ങളിൽ സംഭവിക്കുന്ന ഫ്രീ റാഡിക്കലുകളുടെ ചില രാസപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരിൽ ഒരാളാണ് ക്രിസ്റ്റീൻ.[4] [5]

റഥർഫോർഡ് മെഡൽ നേടിയ ആദ്യ വനിതയായിരുന്നു അവർ. [1] 1997 ലെ ക്വീൻസ് ബർത്ത്ഡേ ഓണേഴ്സിൽ, വിന്റർബോർനെ ന്യൂസിലാന്റ് ഓർഡർ ഓഫ് മെറിറ്റിന്റെ മെഡിക്കൽ ഗവേഷണത്തിനുള്ള സേവനങ്ങൾക്കായി ഓഫീസറായി നിയമിച്ചു.
