കേറ്റ് എമിലി വെൽട്ടൺ ഹോഗ് (1869-1951) ഒരു ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയൻ ഫിസിഷ്യനും എഡിൻബർഗ് കോളേജ് ഓഫ് മെഡിസിൻ ഫോർ വുമണിലെ ബിരുദധാരിയുമായിരുന്നു. ആദ്യകാല വനിതാ ഫിസിഷ്യൻമാരായിരുന്ന മേരി ബൂത്ത്, ആഗ്നസ് ബെന്നറ്റ്, എലീനർ സ്പ്രൂൾ എന്നിവരോടൊപ്പമാണ് അവർ പഠിച്ചിരുന്നത്.[1]

ആദ്യകാല ജീവിതവും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും[തിരുത്തുക]

1869-ൽ ലണ്ടനിൽ ജനിച്ച ഹോഗ് സിഡ്‌നിയിലെ ക്രോയ്‌ഡോണിലാണ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടിയത്.[2] 1894-ൽ സിഡ്‌നി യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയിൽ നിന്ന് ആർട്‌സ് ബിരുദം നേടിയ അവർ[3][4] 1895-ൽ സിഡ്‌നി മെഡിക്കൽ സ്‌കൂളിൽ ചേർന്നുവെങ്കിലും ഡീൻ പ്രൊഫസർ ആൻഡേഴ്‌സൺ സ്റ്റുവർട്ട് നിരുത്സാഹപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന അന്തരീക്ഷം സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതോടെ അവർ നിരാശയായി. സിഡ്‌നി ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് എഡിൻബർഗ് കോളേജ് ഓഫ് മെഡിസിൻ ഫോർ വുമണിൽ ചേർന്ന ഹോഗ് അവിടെനിന്ന് 1900-ൽ MB ChB-യും 1909-ൽ MD ബിരുദവും നേടി.[5]

ഹോഗ് അയർലൻഡ്, ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയ, ന്യൂസിലാൻഡ് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ ഫിസിഷ്യനായി ജോലി ചെയ്തു. വനിതാ ഫിസിഷ്യൻമാർ അസാധാരണമായിരുന്ന ഒരു കാലത്ത്, ഹോഗിന് ജോലിസ്ഥലത്ത് എതിർപ്പും മുൻവിധിയും ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്നത് അവളുടെ കരിയറിനെ നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നു.1901-ൽ ഡബ്ലിനിലെ കൂംബ് വിമൻ ആൻഡ് ഇൻഫന്റ്സ് യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിൽ അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് മാസ്റ്ററായി അവർ നിയമിതയായെങ്കിലും മേലുദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരുടെ അവളോടുള്ള പെരുമാറ്റത്തിൽ നിരാശിതയായ അവർ സമ്മർദ്ദം കാരണമായി ആ വർഷം ജൂണിൽ അവൾ രാജിവച്ചു.[6]

സ്വകാര്യ ജീവിതം[തിരുത്തുക]

1913 ജൂലൈ 5-ന് വെല്ലിംഗ്ടണിൽ വെച്ച് ജെയിംസ് കാംപ്ബെൽ നീലിനെ ഹോഗ് വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു.[7] വിവാഹശേഷം അവൾ ഒരു ഡോക്ടറുടെ ജോലി നിർത്തിയതായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. അവർ ഡോ. സ്റ്റാൻലി വെൽട്ടൺ ഹോഗിന്റെ (1881-1954) സഹോദരിയും ഡോ. റോബർട്ട് വെൽട്ടൺ-ഹോഗിന്റെ (മരണം. 1961) കസിനും ആയിരുന്നു.[8] 1951 ഫെബ്രുവരി 18-ന് ന്യൂസിലാൻഡിലെ ഓക്ക്‌ലൻഡിൽവച്ച് ഹോഗ് അന്തരിച്ചു. അവളുടെ ചിതാഭസ്മം വൈകുമീറ്റ് ശ്മശാനത്തിൽ സംസ്കരിച്ചു.[9][10]
