പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ ചതുപ്പുകളിൽ മാത്രം കണ്ടുവരുന്ന ചെറിയ ഇനം നീർക്കുതിരകളാണ് കുള്ളൻ നീർക്കുതിരകൾ . ഇന്ന് ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന രണ്ട് നീർക്കുതിര ഉപവർഗങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഇത്. പ്രധാനമായും ലൈബീരിയയിലും , സീറാ ലിയോൺ , ഗിനി , ഐവറി കോസ്റ്റ് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ ചെറിയ പറ്റങ്ങളും കണ്ടു വരുന്നു. ഐ.യു.സി.എൻ കണക്ക് പ്രകാരം വംശനാശത്തിന്റെ വക്കിൽ ആണ് ഇവ , ഏകദേശം 3000 എണ്ണം മാത്രമേ ഇനി കാടുകളിൽ ബാക്കി ഉള്ളൂ .
