അഗസ്റ്റ ഫോക്സ് ബ്രോണർ (ജീവിതകാലം: ജൂലൈ 22, 1881 - ഡിസംബർ 11, 1966)[1][2] ജുവനൈൽ മനശാസ്ത്ര മേഖലയിലെ തൻറെ പ്രവർത്തനത്തനങ്ങളുടെ പേരിൽ പ്രശസ്തയായ ഒരു അമേരിക്കൻ മനഃശ്ശാസ്‌ത്രജ്ഞയായിരുന്നു. ആദ്യത്തെ ചൈൽഡ് ഗൈഡൻസ് ക്ലിനിക്കിൻറെ രൂപീകരണത്തിൽ സഹകരിച്ച അവളുടെ ഗവേഷണം കുട്ടികളുടെ കുറ്റകൃത്യത്തിന് പിന്നിലെ കാരണങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള മനഃശാസ്ത്ര സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾക്ക് രൂപം നൽകിയതൊടൊപ്പം പാരമ്പര്യ സ്വഭാവങ്ങളിൽ സാമൂഹികവും പാരിസ്ഥിതികവുമായ ഘടകങ്ങളിൽ ശ്രദ്ധ കേന്ദ്രീകരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്റെ ആവശ്യകതയും ഊന്നിപ്പറയുന്നു.

ആദ്യകാലജീവിതം[തിരുത്തുക]

1881 ജൂലൈ 22 ന് കെന്റക്കിയിലെ ലൂയിസ്‌വില്ലിൽ[3][4][5] ഗുസ്‌താവ് ബ്രോണറുടെയും ഹന്ന ഫോക്‌സ് ബ്രോണറുടെയും മകളായി അഗസ്റ്റ ഫോക്സ് ബ്രോണർ ജനിച്ചു.[6] ജൂതന്മാരായിരുന്ന[7] കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ ഇരുവശത്തുമുള്ള അഗസ്റ്റ ഫോക്സ് ബ്രോണറുടെ മുത്തശ്ശീമുത്തശ്ശന്മാർ യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ജർമ്മനിയിൽ നിന്നുള്ളവരായിരുന്നു.[8] അവൾക്ക് രണ്ട് സഹോദരങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു, ഒരു മൂത്ത സഹോദരനും ഒരു അനുജത്തിയും.[9] വർഷങ്ങളോളം സിൻസിനാറ്റിയിൽ താമസിച്ച ശേഷം, ബ്രോണറുടെ കുടുംബം ലൂയിസ്‌വില്ലിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിപ്പോകുകയും അവിടെ 1898-ൽ അവർ ഹൈസ്‌കൂൾ ഡിപ്ലോമ നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു.[10][11]

വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം[തിരുത്തുക]

ബ്രോണറുടെ അമ്മയും മുത്തശ്ശിയും അവളെ പഠിക്കാനും ഒരു കരിയർ കെട്ടിപ്പടുക്കാനും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിച്ചു. ചെറുപ്പം മുതലേ ഒരു അധ്യാപികയാകാൻ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരുന്ന ബ്രോണർ, ഹൈസ്‌കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിനു ശേഷം ലൂയിസ്‌വില്ലെ നോർമൽ സ്കൂളിൽ അധ്യാപകരുടെ സർട്ടിഫിക്കേഷൻ നേടി. നേത്രസംബന്ധമായ പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങൾ കാരണം ഹ്രസ്വകാലത്തേക്ക് പഠനം ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച അവർ ഏകദേശം ഒരു വർഷം അവളുടെ അമ്മായിയോടൊപ്പം യൂറോപ്പിൽ പര്യടനം നടത്തിയശേഷം[12] പിന്നീട് സ്കൂൾ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് തിരിച്ചെത്തി 1901-ൽ ബിരുദം നേടി.[13]

കൊളംബിയ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി ടീച്ചേഴ്‌സ് കോളേജിൽ ചേർന്ന ശേഷം, ബ്രോണർ 1906-ൽ തന്റെ ബാച്ചിലേഴ്‌സ് ബിരുദവും (ബി.എസ്.)[14] താമസിയാതെ 1909-ൽ[15] ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദവും (എ.എം.)[16] പൂർത്തിയാക്കി. പഠനകാലത്ത്, മനശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞൻ എഡ്വേർഡ് എൽ. തോർൻഡൈക്കിന്റെ പാർട്ട് ടൈം ഗ്രേഡിംഗ് പേപ്പറുകൾക്കായി അവൾ ജോലി ചെയ്തു.[17] 1911-ൽ പിതാവിന്റെ മരണം വരെ അവൾ ലൂയിസ്‌വില്ലെയിലെ അവളുടെ പഴയ സ്‌കൂളായ ഗേൾസ് ഹൈസ്‌കൂളിൽ പഠിപ്പിച്ചു.[18][19] തോർൻഡൈക്കിനൊപ്പം ജോലി ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ട് ബോണർ ടീച്ചേഴ്‌സ് കോളേജിൽ തന്റെ ഡോക്ടറൽ പഠനം ആരംഭിച്ചു.[20]

1914-ൽ, തന്റെ ഡോക്ടറൽ ബിരുദം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ബ്രോണർ, കുറ്റവാളികളായ പെൺകുട്ടികളുടെ ബുദ്ധിയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഒരു താരതമ്യ പഠനം എന്ന പേരിൽ തന്റെ പ്രബന്ധം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ചു.[21][22] കുറ്റകൃത്യവും മാനസിക വൈകല്യവും തമ്മിൽ യാതൊരു ബന്ധവുമില്ലെന്ന് കാണിച്ച ബ്രോണറുടെ ഗവേഷണം ക്രിമിനൽ സ്വഭാവം ജീവശാസ്ത്രപരമായ ഘടകങ്ങളിലൂടെ കടന്നുപോയി എന്ന പൊതു ധാരണയെ അട്ടിമറിക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു.[23]
