(ഉദാഹരണമായി ജന്തുക്കള്‍, സസ്യങ്ങള്‍, പൂപ്പലുകള്‍, സൂക്ഷ്മജീവികള്‍). എല്ലാജീവികളും ഏതെങ്കിലും തരത്തില്‍ ഉദ്ദീപനങ്ങളോട് പ്രതികരിക്കാന്‍ കഴിവുള്ളവയായിരിക്കും. പ്രത്യുത്പാദനം, വളര്‍ച്ച, വികാസം, തുടങ്ങിയവയഅണ് മറ്റ് പ്രകൃതങ്ങള്‍. ജീവികളുടെ ബാഹ്യഘടന, ആന്തരികഘടന, പരിസ്ഥിതിയുമായുള്ള പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ എന്നിവ പഠിക്കുന്ന ശാസ്ത്രശാഖയാണ് ജീവശാസ്ത്രം. ജീവികളെ ഏകകോശജീവികള്‍ എന്നും ബഹുകോശജീവികള്‍ എന്നും തരംതിരിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
