"ദ ഡയറി ഓഫ് ആൻ ഫ്രാങ്ക്", "എ പാച്ച് ഓഫ് ബ്ലൂ" എന്നീ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലെ അഭിനയത്തിന് അക്കാദമി അവാർഡ് നേടുകയും  "എ പ്ലേസ് ഇൻ ദ സൺ" (മികച്ച നടി), "ദ പൊസെയ്ഡോൺ അഡ്വഞ്ചർ" (മികച്ച സഹനടി) എന്നീ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലെ അഭിനയത്തിന് അക്കാദമി അവാർഡിന് പരഗണിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ഷെല്ലി ഷ്രിഫ്റ്റ് എന്ന പേരിൽ മിസൌറിയിലെ സെൻറ് ലൂയിസിൽ ഒരു ഗായികയായ റോസിൻറെയും ഒരു വസ്ത്ര ഡസൈനറായ ജോനാസ് ഷ്രിഫ്റ്റിൻറെയും മകളായി ജനിച്ചു.[1] ഷെല്ലി വിൻറേർസിൻറെ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ ജൂതവംശത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടവരായിരുന്നു. പിതാവ് ആസ്ട്രിയയിൽനിന്നു കുടിയേറിയയാളും മാതാവ് ആസ്ട്രിയൻ കുടിയേറ്റക്കാർക്ക് സെൻറ് ലൂയിസിൽ ജനിച്ചതുമായിരുന്നു.[2] മാതാപിതാക്കൾ മൂന്നാം കസിൻസ് ആയിരുന്നു.[2] ഷെല്ലി വിൻറേർസിന് 3 വയസു പ്രായമുള്ളപ്പോൾ കുടുംബം ന്യൂയോർക്കിലെ ബ്രൂക്ൿലിനിലേയ്ക്കു വന്നു. ലോസ് ആഞ്ചലസിലെ സർക്കിൾ തീയേറ്റർ (ഇപ്പോൾ എൽ സെൻട്രോ തീയേറ്റർ എന്നു പേര്) നടത്തിയിരുന്ന ജോർജ്ജ് ബൊറോഫിനെയാണ് അവരുടെ സഹോദരി ബ്ലാൻചേ ഷ്രിഫ്റ്റ് വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ന്യൂയോർക്ക് നഗരത്തിലെ 'ദ ന്യൂ സ്കൂൾ' എന്ന വിദ്യാലയത്തിലാണ് ഷെല്ലി വിൻറർസ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ചെയ്തത്.
