സൗരോർജ്ജം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന ലോകത്തിലെ ആദ്യ കൃത്രിമ ഉപഗ്രഹം ആണ് വാൻഗാർഡ് 1(Vanguard 1) . [2] യു.എസ്.എ, മാർച്ച് 17, 1958 നാണ് ഈ ഉപഗ്രഹം വിക്ഷേപിച്ചത്. 1964 ൽ ഇതുമായുള്ള വിനിമയബന്ധങ്ങൾ നിലച്ചു എങ്കിലും ,അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പഴയ ഉപഗ്രഹം എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഇത് ഇന്നും നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. ആ സമയത്തെ റഷ്യൻ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ആയിരുന്ന നികിത ക്രൂഷ്ചെവ് ഇതിനെ "The grapefruit satellite" എന്നായിരുന്നു വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്.[3]
