മേരി ഗെർട്രൂഡ് ഹാൾട്ടൺ (ജീവിതകാലം: 1878-1948))[1][2] ഒരു അമേരിക്കൻ പാത്തോളജിസ്റ്റ്, ഗൈനക്കോളജിസ്റ്റ്, പ്രസവചികിത്സക, സ്ത്രീകളുടെ ആരോഗ്യ പ്രവർത്തക വോട്ടവകാശവാദി എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ പ്രശസ്തയായ വനിതയായിരുന്നു.[3] അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിൽ ജനന നിയന്ത്രണത്തെ കൂടുതൽ നിയമവിധേയമാക്കുന്നതിനായി, ആദ്യകാല ഗർഭാശയ ഉപകരണ (IUD) സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഗവേഷണം പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്നതിനായി അവൾ പോരാടി. ഹാർവാർഡ് മെഡിക്കൽ സ്കൂൾ ഫാക്കൽറ്റിയിലേക്ക് നിയമിതയായ ആദ്യ വനിതയായിരുന്നു അവർ.[4]

കാലിഫോർണിയയിലെ സാൻ ഫ്രാൻസിസ്കോയിൽ മേരി ഗൺ ഹാൾട്ടണിന്റെയും ഡോ. റിച്ചാർഡ് ജെ. ഹാൾട്ടണിന്റെയും മകളായി മേരി ജി. ഹാൾട്ടൺ 1878-ൽ ജനിച്ചു.[5] അവളുടെ അച്ഛൻ അയർലണ്ടിലെ ഡബ്ലിനിലാണ് ജനിച്ചത്.[6] യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഓഫ് കാലിഫോർണിയയിലും പിന്നീട് സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയുടെ കൂപ്പർ മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിലും ചേർന്ന അവർ 1900 ജൂൺ 5-ന് വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്ര ബിരുദം നേടി.[7][8][9]

ബിരുദാനന്തരം അവൾ സെന്റ് ഫ്രാൻസിസ് മെമ്മോറിയൽ ഹോസ്പിറ്റൽ, സെന്റ് ലൂക്ക്സ് ഹോസ്പിറ്റൽ, സാൻഫ്രാൻസിസ്കോയിലെ സതേൺ പസഫിക് ഹോസ്പിറ്റൽ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ പതോളജിസ്റ്റായി ജോലി ചെയ്തു.[10] 1906 ആയപ്പോഴേക്കും അവർ ന്യൂയോർക്ക് സിറ്റിയിലേക്ക് താമസം മാറുകയും സ്വന്തം മെഡിക്കൽ പ്രാക്ടീസ് ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[11] ന്യൂയോർക്ക് സിറ്റിയിൽ, ഹാൾട്ടൺ സഫ്രജിസ്റ്റ് പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ ചേരുകയും ഒരു ഫെമിനിസ്റ്റ് നേതാവായി മാറുകയും ചെയ്തു.[12]

മരണം[തിരുത്തുക]

1948 ജനുവരി 25-ന് ന്യൂയോർക്ക് സിറ്റിയിലെ സ്റ്റാറ്റൻ ഐലൻഡിലെ ഡോക്‌ടേഴ്‌സ് ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിൽ വെച്ച് നീണ്ടകാലത്തെ അസുഖത്തെ തുടർന്ന് ഹാൾട്ടൺ അന്തരിച്ചു. മരണസമയത്ത് അവർക്ക് 69 വയസ്സായിരുന്നു.[13] അവരുടെ മരണശേഷം, കൂടുതൽ സ്ത്രീകളെ വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രം പഠിക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കുന്നതിനായി NYU–ബെല്ലെവ്യൂ മെഡിക്കൽ സെന്ററിലെ ഡോ. മേരി ഹാൾട്ടൺ സ്റ്റുഡന്റ് ലോൺ ഫണ്ടിലേക്ക് ഈക്വൽ റൈറ്റ്സ് ഫോർ ബേബീസ് ഫണ്ട് വഴിതിരിച്ചുവിട്ടിരുന്നു.[14]
