കടൽ ആട് പകുതി ആടും പകുതി മത്സ്യവും ഉള്ള ഒരു ജീവി എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഐതിഹാസിക ജലജീവിയാണ്.[2]
കാപ്രിക്കോൺസ് നക്ഷത്രസമൂഹം സാധാരണയായി ഒരു തരം കടൽ ആടായി സങ്കൽപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. മെസൊപ്പൊട്ടേമിയയിലെ വെങ്കലയുഗം മുതൽ ഇത് ചെയ്തുവരുന്നു. ബാബിലോണിയക്കാർ എൻകി ദേവനെ പ്രതീകപ്പെടുത്താൻ MUL SUḪUR.MAŠ, 'ആട് മത്സ്യം' ഉപയോഗിച്ചു.[3][4]

യഹൂദരുടെ വാക്കാലുള്ള ചരിത്രത്തിൽ, കടൽ ആടുകളെ പരാമർശിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു ദിവസം കടലിലെ എല്ലാ ജീവജാലങ്ങളും ലിവിയതൻ എന്ന രാക്ഷസന്റെ മുന്നിൽ സ്വയം സമർപ്പിക്കണമെന്ന് കഥ പറയുന്നു. മറ്റൊന്നിൽ, ഒരു നാവികൻ കടലിൽ ദൂരെയുള്ള ഒരു ആടിനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടി. അതിന്റെ കൊമ്പുകളിൽ ഒരു വാചകം കൊത്തിവച്ചിരുന്നു, "ഞാൻ ഒരു ചെറിയ കടൽ മൃഗമാണ്, എന്നിട്ടും ഞാൻ ലിവിയാത്തന് ഭക്ഷണമായി നൽകാൻ മുന്നൂറ് പരസംഗങ്ങൾ സഞ്ചരിച്ചു."[5]
