Vatsala Mohan

Vatsala Mohan is a well known writer in Malayalam. Born in 1954, in Kottakkal, Malappuram district, Kerala. Her father is Shri. Madathil Narayanan Nair and her mother is Kalathil Lakshmi Amma alias Chinnammu Amma. Her husband is late Shri. P. Mohan Nair, Puthanpurayil, Alappuzha.

She had her early education at the Govt U.P.School and Raja’s High School Kottakkal. She graduated from P.S.M.O. College Tiruranagadi. Vatsala Mohan’s literary career began very early, while she was in her High School. Many of her short stories published in several Malayalam weeklies and magazines in the pen name Vatsala Pandamangalam till 1980.

After Marriage she is writing in the pen name Vatsala Mohan. She has published several short stories, essays, and travelogues in Mathrubhumi, Grihalakshmi, Kukumam, Janayugam, Chandrika, Veekshanam, Mngalam, Theerthasarathy, Vaidyashasthram, Yugashilpi, Silverline etc. Vatsala Mohan’s stories are characterized by a plot that carries an element from her own life experiences. The events and characters in her short stories are from her real life.

The 33 days trip to Kashi and Himalayas is described in her travelogue and memoir “Kashi Chadurdhama Himalaya Yathra” which also broadened her horizons and was a turning point in her literary life. She traveled through all part of Himalaya and visited all the holy places in Himalaya. She also visited almost all states in India, Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan etc. Her essays and travelogues are very informative and gives a clear picture of the place and the people.

The life in Kottakkal before 1980, highly influenced her are the most favorite theme and which she highlighted all in her work. Simple language and the emotional intensity of her work holds the readers captivated. Now she is living in Panniyankara, Kozhikode Dt, Kerala.
