പദാർഥവും പ്രകാശവുമായി , കൃത്യമായി പറയുകയാണെങ്കിൽ പ്രകാശകണങ്ങളുമായി അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പ്രകാശതരംഗങ്ങളുമായി നടക്കുന്ന പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് പഠിക്കുന്ന രസതന്ത്രശാഘയാണ് പ്രകാശരസതന്ത്രം (Photochemistry). കണികാതലത്തിലും തത്മാത്രാതലത്തിലും ഈ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്ക് കാരണമാകുകയോ ഈ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ടാകുകയോ ചെയ്യുന്ന ഭൗതികപ്രതിഭാസങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് പഠിക്കുന്ന ശാസ്ത്രശാഘയാണ് പ്രകാശഭൗതികശാസ്ത്രം (Photophysics). പ്രകാശസംശ്ലേഷണവും, ജീവികളുടെ കാഴ്ചയും, സൗരോർജ്ജസാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യയും ഉൾപ്പടെ പല പ്രതിഭാസങ്ങൾ പ്രകാശരസതന്ത്രവും അതിന്റെ ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്രവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ചരിത്രവും നാഴികക്കല്ലുകളും ജീവന്റെ ഉത്ഭവം : ചെറിയ വാതക തന്മാത്രകളും സൂര്യപ്രകാശവും തമ്മിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ച് ന്യൂക്ലിക്ക് അമ്ലങ്ങളും മാംസ്യതന്മാത്രകളും ഉണ്ടായി. ഇത് ജീവന്റെ ഉത്ഭവത്തിന് വഴി തെളിച്ചു എന്നു കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. 1805: യങ്ങിന്റെ ഇരട്ട വിടവ് പരീക്ഷണം (Young’s double slit experiment) പ്രകാശത്തിന്റെ തരംഗസ്വഭാവം (Wave nature of light) തെളിയിച്ചു. 1864: പ്രകാശത്തിന്റെ വൈദ്യുതകാന്തികതരംഗ സിദ്ധാന്തം (Electromagnetic Wave theory of light) മാക്സ്‌‌വെൽ ((Maxwell)അവതരിപ്പിച്ചു. 1886: First organic photochemical reaction by Giacomo Luigi Ciamician 1887: Photoelectric effect (Heinrich Hertz) Early 1900’s: Grotthus- Draper law Early 1990s: Beer-Lambert law 1900: Black body radiation: Quantum nature of light (Max Planck) 1905: Quantum theory of radiation (Einstein). 1909: Wave-particle duality (Einstein) 1912: Stark-Einstein law 1916: Concept of spontaneous absorption and emission (Einstein) 1917: Concept of stimulated emission: Concept of MASER and LASER (Einstein) 1918: Nobel prize: Max Planck: Energy quanta 1921: Nobel Prize: Einstein: Photoelectric effect 1926: Nomenclature of the light quantum as photon (Gilbert Lewis) 1927: Nobel Prize: Arthur Compton: Compton effect: Photons carry momentum 1953: Discovery of MASER: Charles H.
