ഗോൾഡ് കോസ്റ്റിലെ (ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ ഘാന) കേപ് കോസ്റ്റിലാണ് എഫ്വാ സതർലാന്റ് ജനിച്ചത്. സെന്റ് മോണിക സ്കൂളിലും മാംപോങ് ട്രൈനിംഗ് കോളേജിലുമായി പഠനം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി.^[5]^[6]ഉപരിപഠനം ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ കേംബ്രിഡ്ജ് സർവകലാശാലയുടെ കീഴിലുള്ള ഹോമർടൺ കോളേജിലും ലണ്ടൻ സർവ്വകലാശാലയ്ക്കു കീഴിലുള്ള സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ഓറിയന്റൽ ആന്റ് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ സ്റ്റഡീസിലും ആയിരുന്നു.
