പാശ്ചാത്യലോകത്ത് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ പ്രചാരമുള്ള ലിപിരൂപമാണ് ലത്തീൻ അക്ഷരമാല അഥവാ റോമൻ അക്ഷരമാല. പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ഗ്രീക്ക് അക്ഷരമാലയിൽനിന്നുമുണ്ടായ ക്യൂമിയൻ (Cumaean) ലിപിയിൽനിന്നും ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞ എറ്റ്രൂസ്കനിൽനിന്നുമാണ് ലത്തീൻ ലിപിയുണ്ടായത്.
