ലോകപ്രശസ്തനായ ഭാഷാതത്ത്വജ്ഞനും, പൗരസ്ത്യപൈതൃക ഗവേഷകനുമായിരുന്നു മാക്സ് മുള്ളർ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ജർമൻകാരനായിരുന്ന 'ഫ്രീഡ്റിക് മാക്സ് മുള്ളർ (ജ. ഡിസംബർ 6 1823, മ. ഒക്ടോബർ 28, 1900). പാശ്ചാത്യലോകത്ത് പൌരസ്ത്യ തത്വചിന്തയെക്കുറിച്ചും ഭാരതത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുമുള്ള പഠനങ്ങൾക്ക് തുടക്കമിട്ട വ്യക്തിയെന്ന നിലയിലും മാക്സ് മുള്ളറെ കരുതുന്നവരുണ്ട്.

ഋഗ്വേദത്തിന്റെ സംസ്കൃത വ്യാഖ്യാനവും പഠനങ്ങളും മാക്സ് മുള്ളറെ പ്രശസ്തനാക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. 1850 ൽ മാക്സ് മുള്ളർ നവീന യൂറോപ്യൻ ഭാഷകൾക്കായുള്ള പ്രൊഫസ്സറായി ഓക്സ് ഫോഡ് സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ നിയമിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടു. കമ്പാരറ്റീവ് ഫിലോളജിയുടെ ഓക്സ്ഫോഡിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ പ്രൊഫസ്സറും മാക്സ് മുള്ളർ ആയിരുന്നു. 1844 ൽ ഓക്സ്ഫോഡിൽ തന്റെ ധൈഷണിക ജീവിതം ആരംഭിയ്ക്കുന്നതിനു മുൻപ് തന്നെ ഉപനിഷത്തുക്കൾ തർജ്ജമ ചെയ്യാനും, ഫ്രാൻസ് ബോപ്പിന്റെ കീഴിൽ സംസ്കൃതഭാഷയിൽ ഗവേഷണം നടത്തുവാനും തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. ഫ്രീഡ്റിക്ക് ഷെല്ലിങ്ങുമായി സഹകരിച്ചാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ബർലിൻ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഇക്കാലത്തു തന്നെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ ഗ്രന്ഥമായ ഹിതോപദേശകഥകളുടെ ജർമ്മൻ ഭാഷാന്തരം പ്രസിദ്ധീകൃതമായത്.
