ദക്ഷിണകൊറിയ, ഉത്തരകൊറിയ എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷയാണ് കൊറിയൻ (한국어/조선말. ഇത് ചൈനയുടെ യാൻബിൻ കൊറിയൻ സ്വയംഭരണ പ്രിഫക്ചറിലെ രണ്ട് ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷകളിലൊന്നാണ്. ലോകത്തിൽ ഉദ്ദേശം 8 കോടി ആൾക്കാർ കൊറിയൻ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നവരായുണ്ട്. ആയിരത്തിൽപരം വർഷങ്ങളായി ഹൻജ എന്നുവിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ചൈനീസ് അക്ഷരങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് കൊറിയൻ ഭാഷ എഴുതപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. ഉച്ചാരണമനുസരിച്ച് എഴുതുന്ന ഹ്യാങ്‌ചാൽ, ഗുഗ്യെയോൾ, ഇഡു എന്നീ സംവിധാനങ്ങളും കൊറിയൻ ഭാഷ എഴുതാനായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പതിനഞ്ചാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ഹൻഗുൾ എന്ന എഴു‌ത്തുരീതി മഹാനായ സെജോങ് എന്ന ഭരണാധികാരി നടപ്പിൽ വരുത്തിയെങ്കിലും ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലാണ് ഈ രീതി വ്യാപകമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ടു തുടങ്ങിയത്. യാങ്ബാൻ എന്ന വരേണ്യവർഗ്ഗം ഹൻജ ലിപിയ്ക്ക് മുൻതൂക്കം നൽകിയിരുന്നതാണ് ഇതിനു കാരണം.

മിക്ക ഭാഷാശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്മാരും ഐസൊലേറ്റ് (മറ്റുള്ള ഭാഷകളൊന്നുമായി ബന്ധമില്ലാത്ത ഭാഷ) എന്ന ഗണത്തിലാണ് പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.[3] ചില പണ്ഡിതരുടെ അഭിപ്രായത്തിൽ ഇത് അൾട്ടൈക് എന്ന ഭാഷാകുടുംബത്തിലെ അംഗമാണെന്നാണ്.[4] മറ്റുള്ള എല്ലാ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട ഭാഷകളും (ബാസ്ക്, ഐനു എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടെ) സംസാരിക്കുന്നവരുടെ ആകെ എണ്ണത്തേക്കാളധികമാണ് കൊറിയൻ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നവരുടെ എണ്ണം.[5]
