Peregrine Falcon എന്നും Peregrine എന്നും ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ അറിയുന്ന കായൽ പുള്ളിന്റെ ശാസ്ത്രീയ നാമം Falco peregrinus എന്നാണ്. [2] കാക്കയുടെ വലിപ്പമുണ്ട്. പുറകില് നീല കലർന്ന ചാരനിറം. പിടകൾ പൂവനേക്കാൾ വലുതാണ്..[3][4] വേഗതയ്ക്ക് പേരുകേട്ട പക്ഷിയാണ്. ഇരയെ പിടിയ്ക്കനുള്ള കൂപ്പുകുത്തലിന് 389 കി.മീ/മണിക്കൂർ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇത് ഇവയെ ജീവികളിൽ വേഗതയുള്ളതായി കണാക്കാക്കുന്നതിന് കാരണമാവുന്നു.[5][6]

ഇടത്തരം വലിപ്പമുള്ള പക്ഷികളാണ് പ്രധാന ഭക്ഷണം. എന്നാൽ അപൂർ‌വമായി സസ്തനികൾ , ചെറിയ ഉരഗങ്ങൾ , അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പ്രാണികൾ എന്നിവയെയും ഭക്ഷിക്കും.

ഇവ ഒരു വർഷത്തിനുള്ളിൽ ലൈംഗിക വളർച്ചയെത്തും. ജീവിത കാലം മുഴുവൻ ഒരേ ഇണ തന്നെയായിരിക്കും. ഉയർന്ന പാറക്കൂട്ടത്തിലും ഉയർന്ന കെട്ടിടങ്ങളിലും കൂടുകെട്ടുന്നു. [7]

നീളം 34-58 സെ.മീ ആണ്. ചിറകുകളുടെ അറ്റങ്ങൾ തമ്മിൽ 74-120 സെ.മീ അകലമുണ്ട്. ആണും പെണ്ണും ഒരേ പോലെയിരിക്കും. [3] പിടയ്ക്ക് പൂവനേക്കാൾ 30% വലിപ്പം കൂടുതലുണ്ട്.[8] പൂവന് 424-750 ഗ്രാം തൂക്കം കാണും. വലിയവയ്ക്ക് 910-1500 ഗ്രം തൂക്കം കണും. കടുത്ത് തവിട്ടു നിറമോ കറുപ്പോ പട്ടകളോടു കൂടിയ വെള്ളയോ ചെമ്പിച്ചതോ ആയ അടിവശം. പ്രായമാവത്ത കുട്ടി കപ്പലിലിരുന്നു് ഭക്ഷിക്കുന്നു.

പക്ഷികളെ മാത്രം ഭക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. ഇവ സൂര്യോദയം തൊട്ട് അസ്തമയം വരെ വേട്ടയാടുന്നു. തുറസ്സായ സ്ഥലത്താണ് വേട്ടയാടുന്നത്. [10] പ്രാവുകളെ ആണ് പല ഇടങ്ങളിലും ഇവ ഭക്ഷണം ആകുന്നതുമാണ് കണ്ടു വരുന്നത്. ഇത് പ്രാവുകളുടെ ലഭ്യത കൊണ്ടും ആവാം .. ഭക്ഷണത്തിനായി നൂറോ നൂറ്റമ്പതോ കിലോമീറ്റർ വരെ ദിവസേന സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന വിവരങ്ങൾ ഇവയുടെ സ്വഭാവം നിരീക്ഷിക്കുന്ന പക്ഷി നിരീക്ഷകർ ഉപഗ്രഹ സഹായത്തോടെ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന വിവര സമ്പാദന ( സോളാർ പവേർഡ് സാറ്റലൈറ്റ് ടാറ്റ ലോഗർ ) ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ വഴി കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട് ....

മുട്ടയിടാനുള്ള സ്ഥലം പിടയാണ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നത്. മുട്ടയിടുന്ന കാലം പ്രദേശത്തിനനുസരിച്ച് വ്യത്യാസപ്പെടും. സാധാരണയായി മൂന്നു മുതൽ അഞ്ചു മുട്ടവരെയിടും. [11] വെള്ളയോ മങ്ങിയ മ‍ഞ്ഞനിറത്തോടു കൂടിയതോ ആയ മുട്ടകളിൽ തവിട്ടു വരകളുണ്ടായിരിക്കും..[11] മുട്ട വിരിയാൻ 29-33 ദിവസം വേണം. വിരിഞ്ഞ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ "eyases" എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്.[12]) എന്നിരുന്നാലും പ്രധാനമായും നല്ല പൊക്കമുള്ള, ശല്യങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലാത്ത മരത്തിലോ, ഒഴിവാക്കി ഇട്ട കെട്ടിടങ്ങളിലോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ നല്ല ഉയരമുള്ള കുന്നുകളിലെ വൃക്ഷങ്ങളിലോ ആണ് കൂടുകൂടാറുള്ളത് ..... യൂറോപ്പിൽ ഇതിന്റെ പ്രജനനവും സംരക്ഷണവും ഉറപ്പാക്കുവാൻ ധാരാളം സന്നദ്ധസംഘടനകൾ ഉണ്ട്. ഇവ ഭക്ഷണമാക്കുന്ന പക്ഷികളുടെ മാംസത്തിൽ കീടനാശിനികൾ അടങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ അത് ഈ പക്ഷികളെയും ബാധിക്കുകയും ഇവയുടെ മുട്ടയുടെ തോടിന്റെ കട്ടി കുറക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ ആരോഗ്യമുള്ള മുട്ടകളുടെ അഭാവത്തിൽ ഇവയ്ക്ക് വംശനാശ ഭീഷണി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഡി ഡി ടി പോലുള്ളവ നിരോധിച്ചത് കാരണം ഇപ്പോൾ ഇവ നന്നായി പ്രജനനം നടത്തുന്നതായി കാണുന്നു. ഇവയുടെ ഇരപിടുത്ത സമയത്തെ കായികചലനങ്ങൾ യുദ്ധവിമാനങ്ങളുടെ നിർമാണ സാങ്കേതിക വിദ്യയിൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.
