ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയിലെ തദ്ദേശീയജാതിയായ ഒരിനം അരണയാണ് കാട്ടരണ (Sphenomorphus dussumieri). ഡുസുമിയേഴ്സ് ഫോറസ്റ്റ് സ്കിങ്ക് എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന സ്ഫെനോമോർഫസ് ഡുസ്സുമിയേരി അരണ (Scincidae) കുടുംബത്തിലാണ് ഇത് ഉൾപെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്. പശ്ചിമഘട്ട മലനിരകളിലും, ഗുജറാത്ത് മേഖലയിലും, ശ്രീലങ്കയിലും മറ്റുമാണ് ഇവ പൊതുവായി കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്.[1][2]
19-ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യയിൽ നിന്ന് സുവോളജിക്കൽ മാതൃകകൾ ശേഖരിച്ച ഒരു ഫ്രഞ്ച് യാത്രികനായ ജീൻ-ജാക്വസ് ദുസ്മ്യീറിനോടുള്ള ബഹുമാനാർത്ഥമാണ് ശാസ്ത്രനാമത്തിലെ ഡുസ്സുമിയേരി എന്ന പേരു വന്നത്.[3] ഇത് പ്രാദേശികമായി അരണ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.

തലയും കഴുത്തും വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. പുറം ഭാഗം തവിട്ട് നിറത്തിലാണ്. അതിൽ ചെറിയ പുള്ളികളും കണ്ണിനു താഴെ ശരീരത്തിന്റെ വശത്തുകൂടെ കറുത്ത വരയും കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ശരീരത്തിന്റെ താഴ്ഭാഗം ക്രീം നിറത്തിലാണ്. മൂക്കും കൈകാലുകളും ചെറുതാണ്.[4]

നിത്യഹരിത വനങ്ങൾ, ആർദ്ര ഇലപൊഴിക്കും കാടുകൾ, റബ്ബർ പ്ലാന്റേഷനുകൾ, തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ഇവ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.[1]
