ഡെങ്കിപ്പനി, ചിക്കുൻഗുനിയ, മഞ്ഞപ്പനി തുടങ്ങിയ വൈറസ് രോഗങ്ങൾ പരത്തുന്ന കൊതുകിനെ ഈഡിസ് ഈജിപ്തി (Aedes aegypti) എന്നാ ശാസ്ത്രനാമത്തിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈഡിസ് ജനുസ്സിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ട ഈ കൊതുകിനെ, മഞ്ഞപ്പനി കൊതുക് (Yellow fever mosquito), കടുവ കൊതുക് (Tiger mosquito) എന്ന പേരുകളിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ആഫ്രിക്കയിൽ ജനനം കൊണ്ട ഈ കൊതുകുകൾ [2] ഇന്ന് ലോകത്തിലെ എല്ലാ ഉഷ്ണ മേഖല പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും, സമശീതോഷ്ണ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്നു [3]കറുത്ത നിറമുള്ള ഇവയുടെ കാലുകളിൽ തിളങ്ങുന്ന വെള്ള വരകളും , മുതുകിൽ ലയറിന്റെ (Lyre : മൂർശംഖു ) ആകൃതിയിൽ ഉള്ള വെള്ള വരകളും കൊണ്ട് ഇവയെ പെട്ടന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയാം.
പൂർണ്ണവളർച്ചയെത്തിയ ഒരു ഈഡിസ് ഈജിപ്തി കൊതുകിന്റെ ശരാശരി ആയുസ്സ് രണ്ടു മുതൽ നാലുവരെ ആഴ്ച്ചയാണു്[4] പക്ഷേ, വരണ്ട കാലാവസ്ഥയിൽ പോലും ഇവയുടെ മുട്ടകൾ ഒരു വർഷം വരെ കേടുകൂടാതെ ഇരിക്കും. അതിനാൽ, മഴക്കാലം തുടങ്ങുന്നതോടെ, ഇത്തരം കൊതുകിന്റെ പ്രജനനവും തന്മൂലമുള്ള പകർച്ചവ്യാധികളും വർദ്ധിക്കുന്നു[5].
