ഒരു സോവിയറ്റ് ബഹിരാകാശസഞ്ചാരിയാണ് യൂറി അലക്സെയ്വിച് ഗഗാറിൻ(റഷ്യൻ: Ю́рий Алексе́евич Гага́рин[1], Jurij Aleksejevič Gagarin)1934 മാർച്ച് 9ന് ക്ലുഷിനോ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ ജനിച്ചു. ഇന്നത്തെ റഷ്യയിലെ സ്മൊളൻസ്ക് ഒബ്ലാസ്റ്റിലാണ് ഈ ഗ്രാമം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. 1961 ഏപ്രിൽ 12ന് ഇദ്ദേഹം ബഹിരാകാശത്തെത്തിയ ആദ്യ മനുഷ്യനായി. ഭൂമിയെ ഭ്രമണം ചെയ്ത ആദ്യ മനുഷ്യനും ഇദ്ദേഹമാണ്. വോസ്റ്റോക് 3കെഎ-2 എന്ന ബഹിരാകാശ വാഹനത്തിലായിരുന്നു ആ യാത്ര. ബഹിരാകാശസഞ്ചാര മേഖലയിലെ പ്രഥമദർശകൻ എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പല രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽനിന്നായി പല പുരസ്കാരങ്ങൾ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1968 മാർച്ച് 27ന് ഒരു പരിശീലനപ്പറക്കലിനിടെ മോസ്കോയ്ക്കടുത്തുവച്ച് മിഗ് 15 വിമാനം തകർന്നുണ്ടായ അപകടത്തേത്തുടർന്ന്[2] അന്തരിച്ചു.
