യഹൂദമത നേതാവും, നിയമജ്ഞനും, പ്രവാചകനും, സൈന്യാധിപനും, ചരിത്രകാരനും ആയി കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ചരിത്രപുരുഷനാണ് മോശ. മിസ്രേമില്‍ (ഈജിപ്ത്തില്‍) അടിമത്തത്തില്‍ ആയിരുന്ന യഹൂദരെ അവിടെ നിന്നും മോചിപ്പിപ്പ് വാഗ്ദത്തനാടായ കനാനിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചത് മോശയാണെന്നു യഹൂദന്മാര്‍ കരുതുന്നു.

പഴയനിയമത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ അഞ്ചു പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ (തോറ) മോശ എഴുതിയതാണെന്നു പാരമ്പര്യമായി വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. സീയോന്‍ പര്‍വ്വതത്തില്‍ വച്ച് മോശയ്ക്ക് യഹോവയില്‍ നിന്നു അരുളപ്പാട് ഉണ്ടായെന്നും പത്തു കല്പനകള്‍ അടക്കം ഉള്ള നിയമങ്ങള്‍ മോശക്ക് ലഭിച്ചു എന്നും യഹൂദര്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.

യഹൂദര്‍ മിസ്രേം ദേശത്ത് അടിമയായിരുന്ന സമയത്ത് ലേവി ഗോത്രത്തില്‍ പെട്ട അമ്രാം, യോഖേബേദ് എന്നിവരുടെ മകനായാണ് മോശ പിറന്നതെന്നു ബൈബിള്‍ പറയുന്നു. ബൈബിളിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ അഞ്ചു പുസ്തകങ്ങളില്‍ മിസ്രേമില്‍ ജനിച്ച് 120 ആമത്തെ വയസ്സില്‍ മരിക്കുന്നതു വരെയുള്ള മോശയുടെ ജീവചരിത്രവും ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്നു.

യഹൂദരും, ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളും, മുസ്ലീംങ്ങളും മോശയെ ഒരു പ്രവാചകനായി കരുതുന്നു.
