ഇന്തോ-ഇറാനിയൻ ഭാഷകളിലെ കിഴക്കൻ ഇറാനിയൻ ഉപഗണത്തിൽപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഭാഷയാണ് പഷ്തു അഥവാ പഖ്തു. അഫ്ഗാനിസ്താനിലേയും പാകിസ്താനിലേയും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ജനവിഭാഗമായ പഷ്തൂണുകളുടെ മാതൃഭാഷയും അഫ്ഗാനിസ്താനിലെ ഒരു ഔദ്യോഗികഭാഷയുമാണിത്. പഷ്തൂണുകൾ അഫ്ഗാനി എന്ന പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നതിനാൽ ഈ ഭാഷയും അഫ്ഗാനി എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ ഭാഷക്ക് പേർഷ്യൻ, കുർദിഷ്, ബലൂചി തുടങ്ങിയ ഭാഷകളുമായി ബന്ധമുണ്ട്. യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ പഷ്തുവും പഖ്തുവും ഒരേ ഭാഷയുടെ രണ്ടു പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ശൈലികളാണ്. മൃദുവായ ശൈലിയായ പഷ്തു, തെക്കുഭാഗത്തും, കടുത്ത ശൈലിയായ പഖ്തു വടക്കുഭാഗത്തും സംസാരിക്കപ്പെടൂന്നു.
ബി.സി.ഇ. രണ്ടാം സഹസ്രാബ്ദത്തിൽ ഇറാനിയൻ പീഠഭൂമിയിലേക്ക് ദക്ഷിണമദ്ധ്യേഷ്യരാണ് ഈ ഭാഷ എത്തിച്ചത്. കാലക്രമേണ ഇന്നത്തെ തെക്കേ അഫ്ഗാനിസ്താനിലും വടക്കൻ പാകിസ്താനിലും മുൻപ് പ്രചരിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഓർമുറി, പറാചി തുടങ്ങിയ ഭാഷകളെ പഷ്തു ആദേശം ചെയ്തു എന്നു കരുതുന്നു[6].
