നീലത്തിമിംഗലത്തിന്റെ അടുത്ത ബന്ധുവായ ഇവയ്ക്ക് വലുപ്പത്തിൽ രണ്ടാംസ്ഥാനമാണ്. 27 മീറ്ററോളം നീളവും 80,000 കിലോയോളം ഭാരവും ഉണ്ടാകും[3]. കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങൾക്ക് 6 മീറ്ററിലധികം ഭാരവും 2000 കിലോവോളം ഭാരവും കാണും. ഇരുപതോളമുള്ള കൂട്ടങ്ങളായാണ് സാധാരന സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നത്. ചെറു ജീവികളും ചെമ്മീനുകളുമാണ് പ്രധാന ഭക്ഷണം. വിദേശരാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ ഇറച്ചിക്കും എണ്ണയ്ക്കും വേണ്ടി ഇവയെ ധാരാളം കൊന്നൊടുക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.[4]
