കെനിയയിലെ ഒരു സംരക്ഷിത പ്രദേശമാണ് മൗണ്ട് കെനിയയും അതിന്റെ പ്രാന്തപ്രദേശങ്ങളും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന മൌണ്ട് കെനിയ ദേശീയോദ്യാനം. ദേശീയോദ്യാന പദവി ലഭിക്കുന്നതിന് മുൻപേ ഈ പ്രദേശം മുഴുവനായും ഒരു സംരക്ഷിത വനമേഖലയായിരുന്നു.[1] 1978 ഏപ്രിലിൽ ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ യുനെസ്കോ ഒരു സംരക്ഷിത ജൈവമണ്ഡലമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു.[2] ദേശീയോദ്യാനത്തേയും അതിനോട്ചേർന്ന സംരക്ഷിത വനമേഖലയേയും യുനെസ്കോ 1997-ൽ ലോകപൈതൃക കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളുടെ പട്ടികയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി.[3]
കെനിയൻ സർക്കാർ, മൗണ്ട് കെനിയയേയും ചുറ്റുമുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളേയും ദേശീയോദ്യാനമായി ഉയർത്തിയതിനുപിന്നിൽ പ്രധാനമായും 4 കാരണങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. വിനോദ സഞ്ചാരത്തിൽ ഈ മേഖലക്കുള്ള പ്രാധാന്യം, പ്രാദേശികവും, ദേശീയവുമായ സമ്പദ് വ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ മൗണ്ട് കെനിയ വഹിക്കുന്ന പങ്ക്, അത്യപൂർവ്വമായ പ്രകൃതിഭംഗിയുള്ള ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെയും ഇവിടത്തെ ജൈവവൈവിധ്യത്തേയും സംരക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടതിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം, കൂടാതെ ഭൂഗർഭജലസംഭരണത്തിൽ ഈ പ്രദേശം വഹിക്കുന്ന പങ്ക് തുടങ്ങിയവയാണ് ആ കാരണങ്ങൾ.[4]
715 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ ആണ് ദേശീയോദ്യാനത്തിന്റെ വിസ്തൃതി. ഇവയിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗം സ്ഥലവും സമുദ്രനിരപ്പിൽനിന്ന് 3000 മീറ്റർ ഉയരത്തിലാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.[5][6] പർവ്വതത്തിന്റെ താഴ്വാര മേഖലകളിൽ കൊളോബസ് കുരങ്ങുകൾ, കേപ് ബഫല്ലോ തുടങ്ങിയ ജീവികൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.[7][8]
