ഒരു ജാപ്പനീസ് കാവ്യരൂപമാണ് ഹൈക്കു.(Haiku (俳句 haikai verse?) listen 17 മാത്രകൾ (ജപ്പാനീസ് ഭാഷയിൽ ഓൻജി onji 音字) ഉള്ളതും 5,7,5 എന്നിങ്ങനെ മാത്രകൾ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന 3 പദസമുച്ചയങ്ങൾ (വരികൾ) ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നതുമായ കവിതകളാണ് ഇവ [1][2] [3]. നേരത്തെ ഹോക്കു എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ചെറുകവിതകൾക്ക് മസാവോക ഷികി (Masaoka Shiki) ആണ് 19-ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനെ അവസാനം ഹൈകു എന്ന പേർ നൽകിയത്. ഹൈക്കുവിൽ പൊതുവേ കിഗോ (Kigo 季語)എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നതും, ഋതുവിനെ കുറിക്കുന്നതുമായ പദമോ പദസമുച്ചയങ്ങളോ കാണാം. കിരേജി Kireji (切れ字, lit. "cutting word") എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രധാന വാക്ക് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പദസമുച്ചയവും ഹൈക്കുവിൽ ഉണ്ടാവും.
