റോളണ്ട്
ചാർലിമഗ്നെയുടെ കിഴിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഫ്രങ്കിഷ് പട്ടാള നേതാവാണ്‌ “‘റോളണ്ട്”’(Frankish: Hruodland) (died 15 August 778) ..ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ മാറ്റർ ഓഫ് ഫ്രാൻസ് എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.ബ്രെട്ടൺ മാർച്ചിലെ പട്ടാള ഗവർണറായിരുന്നു റോളണ്ട്. ബ്റ്റട്ടന്റെ ഫ്രാൻസിയയെ ആക്രമണത്തെ ചെറുക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള ചുമതല ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനായിരുന്നു.ഐൻഹാർഡിന്റെ “വിറ്റ കരോളി മാഗ്നി” എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിലൂടെയാണ്‌ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ചരിത്രപരമായി മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നത്.റോൻസെവൗക്സ് പാസ്(Roncevaux pass) യുദ്ധത്തിൽ ഇബീരിയയിൽ വച്ച് ബേസ്ക്വെസ് വിപ്ലവകാരികളാൽ അദ്ദേഹം കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. റോളണ്ടിന്റെ റോൻസെവൗക്സിൽ വച്ചുള്ള മരണമ്മധ്യകാല സാഹിത്യത്തിനും നവോത്ഥാനകാല സാഹിത്യത്തിലും കാണപ്പെട്ടു.ചാർലിമഗ്നെ ചക്രവർത്തിയുടെ പ്രധാന മഹാശൂരനായി തീർന്നു[1]}}.ഇതിഹാസപരമായ പല കാര്യങ്ങളും അദ്ദേഹത്തിൽ ഒത്ത്ചേർന്നിരുന്നു.അതുകൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ മാറ്റർ ഓഫ് ഫ്രാൻസ് എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെട്ടു.ആദ്യത്തേതും വളരെ പ്രശസ്തമായ അദ്ദേഹത്തേപറ്റിയുള്ള രചന പഴയ ഫ്രഞ്ചിൽ എഴുതിയ ,പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ചാൻസൺ ഡി റോളൻഡ് ആൺ`. രണ്ട് മാസ്റ്റർപീസുകളായ നവോത്ഥാന കാവ്യങ്ങളും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനേക്കുറിച്ച് ഉണ്ടായി “ഒർലാൻഡോ ഇന്നമൊരാറ്റോ”യും ഒർലാൻഡൊ ഫുരി‍ാസൊയും ഇവ ചരിത്രത്തേക്കാളുപരി ചാൻസൺ കൃതിയിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രചോദനമാവയാണ്‌.റോളണ്ട് സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വാളായ ദുരെന്ദാലും(Durenda) അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കുതിരയായ വില്ലന്റിഫ്(Villantif)ഉം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കുഴൽ വാദ്യമായ ഒലിഫന്റ്യും അവയിൽ വരുന്നു]].[2] .

- The Orlando character who appears in Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series is an amalgamation of this character and several other fictional Orlandos/Rolands.
- Orlando: A Biography, by Virginia Woolf, was the inspiration for the 1992 film Orlando, directed by Sally Potter and starring Tilda Swinton.
- Roland is an important element in the plot of Michael Moorcock's Elric series of novels, appearing in book 6 "Stormbringer".
