അമേരിക്കയിൽ ജനിച്ച എറിക് സീഗൽ യേൽ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ പ്രൊഫസറായിരിക്കെ 1970ലാണ് 'ലൗസ്റ്റോറി' എഴുതുന്നത്. ഒരു യഥാർഥ സംഭവമാണ് അതിന് ഇതിവൃത്തമായത്. സമ്പന്നകുടുംബത്തിൽ പിറന്ന ഒലിവറും ദരിദ്രപശ്ചാത്തലക്കാരിയായ ജന്നിഫറും തമ്മിലുള്ള പ്രണയകഥയാണ് നോവൽ പറയുന്നത്. എതിർപ്പ് അവഗണിച്ച് അവർ വിവാഹിതരായി. പിന്നീട് ജന്നിഫർ രക്താർബുദം ബാധിച്ച് മരിക്കുന്നു. ദശലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് പ്രതികൾ വിറ്റഴിഞ്ഞ ഈ നോവൽ ഏറെക്കാലം ബെസ്റ്റ് സെല്ലർ പട്ടികയിൽ തുടർന്നു.[1]
ആർതർ ഹില്ലർ പിന്നീടത് സിനിമയാക്കിയപ്പോഴും വൻ വിജയം നേടി. മികച്ച സംഗീതത്തിനുള്ള ഓസ്കർ ബഹുമതി സ്വന്തമാക്കിയ ഈ ചിത്രം മറ്റ് ആറ് നാമനിർദേശങ്ങൾക്കും അർഹമായിരുന്നു. എറിക് സീഗൽ തന്നെയാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കഥയും തയ്യാറാക്കിയത്.
