അയർലെന്റിന്റെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സമരവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട്‌ നടന്ന ശക്തമായ കലാപമാണ്‌ ഈസ്റ്റർ കലാപം. ദീർഘകാലമായി നിലവിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷ്‌ മേൽക്കോയ്‌മക്കെതിരെ അയർലന്റിലെ ജനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിവന്ന പ്രക്ഷോഭങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടതാണ്‌ ഈസ്റ്റർ കാലാപം. സ്വയം ഭരണം നൽകാൻ ബ്രീട്ടൺ തയ്യാറാകാഞ്ഞതാണ്‌ കലാപം പൊട്ടിപ്പുറപ്പെടാനുണ്ടായ പ്രത്യക്ഷ കാരണം. 1916 ഏപ്രിലിലിലെ ഈസ്റ്റർ ദിനത്തിലാണ്‌ ഈ കലാപം നടന്നത്. ഈ കലാപത്തിൽ നിരവധിപേർ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയും, നൂറുകണക്കിനാളുകൾക്ക്‌ പരിക്കേൽക്കുകയും ചെയ്‌തു.

വിപ്ലവകാരികളായ ഏഴു പേരുടെ നേതൃത്ത്വത്തിൽ തോക്കുകളേന്തി ചുരുങ്ങിയ ആയുധബലം മാത്രമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന സന്നദ്ധഭടന്മാരുടെ ഒരു ജനകീയ സൈന്യം ഡബ്ലിൻ നഗര മധ്യത്തുള്ള ജനറൽ പോസ്റ്റോഫീസും മറ്റ് ചില പ്രമുഖ കെട്ടിടങ്ങളും പിടിച്ചടക്കി. ഈ പിടിച്ചടക്കല്ലിന് വളരെ കുറച്ച് ആയുസ്സേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളൂ. അവർ ഐറിഷ് റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കിന്റെ താൽക്കാലിക സർക്കാർ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. വലിയ സൈനിക ശക്തിയായിരുന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സേന ഈ നീക്കത്തെ പെട്ടെന്ന് തിരിച്ചടിച്ചു. കവി പാട്രിക് പിയേഴ്സ്, സോഷ്യലിസ്റ്റ് ജയിംസ് കൊണ്ണോലി തുടങ്ങി കീഴടങ്ങിയ നേതാക്കളെയെല്ലാം മരണശിക്ഷയ്ക്കു വിധേയരാക്കി. നൂറുകണക്കിനാളുകളെ തുറുങ്കിലടച്ചു.
