ഇറ്റലിയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഒരു സജീവ അഗ്നിപർവ്വതമാണ് വെസൂവിയസ്. ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും അപകടകരമായ അഗ്നിപർവ്വതങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണിത്. വെസൂവിയസിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ പൊട്ടിത്തെറിയുണ്ടായത് എ. ഡി 79-ലാണ്. റോമൻ നഗരങ്ങളായ പോംപിയും (Pompeii), ഹെർക്കുലേനിയവും (Herculaneum) ഈ സ്ഫോടനത്തിൽ നാമാവശേഷമായി. 1592 ലാണ് പോംപി നഗരം വീണ്ടും കണ്ടെത്തപ്പെട്ടത്. യുനെസ്കോ "വേൾഡ് ഹെറിറ്റേജ് സൈറ്റ്" ആയി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന വെസൂവിയസ് പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു വിനോദസഞ്ചാരകേന്ദ്രം കൂടിയാണ്.
