ജാപ്പനീസ് തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തും സംവിധായകനുമായ നഗിസാ ഒഷിമ 1932 ൽ ജപ്പാനിലെ ക്യോട്ടോയിൽ ജനിച്ചു. ക്യോട്ടോ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്നും ബിരുദപഠനം പൂർത്തിയാക്കിയ ഒഷിമ സിനിമാ നിർമ്മാണ കമ്പനിയായ ഷോചികുവിനു വേണ്ടി ജോലി ചെയ്തു. തുടർന്നു സ്വന്തം നിലയ്ക്ക് സിനിമാസംവിധാനം ചെയ്തുതുടങ്ങി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കന്നിചിത്രമാണ് 1959 ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ A Town of Love and Hope. 1983ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence ഒഷിമയുടെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ സിനിമയാണ്.
