ജീവചരിത്രം

ഹെലൻ മേരി എലിസബേത്ത് പാറ്റേഴ്സൺ 1848 സെപ്തംബർ 26നു ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ ഡർബിഷയറിലെ സ്വാഡ്‌ലിൻകോട്ട് ആണു ജനിച്ചത്. ഒരു മെഡിക്കൽ ഡോക്ടർ ആയ അലക്സാണ്ടർ ഹെൻറി പാറ്റേഴ്സണിന്റെയും മേരി ഹെർഫോർഡ് പാറ്റേഴ്സണിന്റെയും മകളായിരുന്നു. ഏഴു സഹോദരങ്ങളിൽ മൂത്തവളായിരുന്നു ഹെലെൻ. അവർക്ക് ഒരു വയസ്സായപ്പോൾ ആ കുടുംബം ചെഷയറിലെ അൾട്രിഞ്ചാം എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തേയ്ക്കു താമസം മാറി. 1862ൽ അവരുടെ പിതാവും അന്ന് 3 വയസ്സു മാത്രമുള്ള അവരുടെ ഒരു സഹോദരിയും ഡിഫ്തീരിയ ബാധിച്ച് മരണമടഞ്ഞു. തുടർന്ന് അവരുടെ കുടുംബം അലക്സാണ്ടർ പാറ്റേഴ്സണിന്റെ ചില ബന്ധുക്കൾ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന ബിർമിങ്ഹാമിലേയ്ക്കു താമസം മാറി.

അവർ ചെറുപ്പത്തിലേ തന്റെ കഴിവുകൾ പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചുതുടങ്ങി. തന്റെ അമ്മയുടെ മുത്തശ്ശിയായ സാറാ സ്മിത്ത് ഹെർഫോർഡിൽനിന്നും അമ്മായിയായ ലൗറ ഹെർഫോർഡിൽനിന്നും പാരമ്പര്യമായി ചിത്രകലാപാരമ്പര്യം അവർക്കു ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. രണ്ടുപേരും ചിത്രകലാവിദഗ്ദ്ധരായിരുന്നു. അവരുടെ സഹൊദരിയായിരുന്ന കരോലിൻ പാറ്റേഴ്സണും പ്രശസ്ത ചിത്രകാരിയായിരുന്നു. ആദ്യം, ബർമിങ്ഹാം സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ഡിസൈനിൽനിന്നും അവർ 3 വർഷം കലാവിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടി. (ബർമിങ്ഹാം സ്കൂൾ ഓഫ് ഡിസൈൻ സ്ഥാപിതമായത് 1843ൽ). 1867ൽ ലണ്ടനിലെ നാഷണൽ ആർട് സ്കൂളിൽ ചേർന്ന് പഠിച്ചു. ഈ കലാശാലയിൽ സ്ത്രീകൾക്കായി പ്രത്യേക വിഭാഗം തന്നെയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവരുടെ അമ്മായി ആയിരുന്ന ലൗറ ഹെർഫോർഡും ഇവിടെ പഠിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇന്ന് ഈ സ്കൂൾ റോയൽ കോളജ് ഓഫ് ആർട്ട് എന്നാണറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.
