രൂത്ത് ബെനഡിക്ട് (ജൂൺ 5, 1887 – സെപ്തംബർ17, 1948) അമേരിക്കൻ നരവംശശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞയും ഒരു ജനതയുടെ ആചാരങ്ങൾ, വിശ്വാസങ്ങൾ, ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠിതാവും ആയിരുന്നു. ന്യൂയോർക്ക് സിറ്റിയിൽ ജനിക്കുകയും 1909-ൽ വാസ്സർ കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ബിരുദമെടുക്കുകയും എൽസി ക്ലൂസ് പാർസൻസിന്റെ ശിക്ഷണത്തിൽ ന്യൂ സ്ക്കൂൾ ഓഫ് റിസേർച്ചിൽ നിന്ന് നരവംശശാസ്ത്രം പഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1921-ൽ കൊളംബിയ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ ഫ്രാൻസ് ബയോസിന്റെ ശിക്ഷണത്തിൽ ബിരുദപഠനത്തിന് ചേരുകയും തുടർന്ന് 1923-ൽ നരവംശശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ മാസ്റ്റർ ബിരുദമെടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. നരവംശശാസ്ത്രത്തെ ജനകീയമാക്കുന്നതിൽ വലിയ പങ്കു വഹിച്ച മാർഗരറ്റ് മീഡുമായി[1] നല്ല സ്നേഹബന്ധം പുലർത്തുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു.[2] മാർവിൻ ഒപ്ലർ സുഹൃത്തും വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയും ആയിരുന്നു.

അമേരിക്കൻ ആന്ത്രോപോളജിക്കൽ അസോസിയേഷൻ പ്രസിഡന്റ് പദവി വഹിച്ച ബെനഡിക്റ്റ് അമേരിക്കൻ ഫോക്ലോർ സൊസൈറ്റിയിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന അംഗം കൂടിയായിരുന്നു.[3] പഠിച്ച തൊഴിലിലെ ഒരു പ്രമുഖ നേതാവായി അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ആദ്യ വനിതയായി.[3]സംസ്കാര-സ്വഭാവ വ്യാപന പഠനങ്ങളുടെ പരിമിതികളിൽ നിന്നും സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ വ്യാഖ്യാനത്തിന്റെ അവിഭാജ്യ ഘടകമായ പ്രകടന സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങളിലേക്കും നരവംശശാസ്ത്രത്തെയും നാടോടിക്കഥകളെയും വഴിതിരിച്ചുവിടുന്ന ഒരു പരിവർത്തന വ്യക്തിയായി അവളെ കാണാൻ കഴിയും. വ്യക്തിത്വം, കല, ഭാഷ, സംസ്കാരം എന്നിവ തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് അവർ പഠിച്ചു. ഒറ്റപ്പെടലിലോ സ്വയംപര്യാപ്തതയിലോ ഒരു സ്വഭാവവും നിലവിലില്ലെന്ന് അവർ വാദിച്ചു. ഈ സിദ്ധാന്തം 1934 ലെ അവരുടെ പാറ്റേൺ ഓഫ് കൾച്ചറിൽ വിജയിച്ചു.

1887 ജൂൺ 5 ന് ന്യൂയോർക്ക് സിറ്റിയിൽ ബിയാട്രിസ് (ഷട്ടക്ക്), ഫ്രെഡറിക് ഫുൾട്ടൺ എന്നിവരുടെ മകളായി ബെനഡിക്റ്റ് ജനിച്ചു.[4][5][6] അമ്മ ഒരു സ്കൂൾ അദ്ധ്യാപികയായി നഗരത്തിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തു. അച്ഛൻ ഹോമിയോ ഡോക്ടർ, സർജൻ എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ മികച്ച ജീവിതം നയിച്ചു.[4]മിസ്റ്റർ ഫുൾട്ടൺ തന്റെ ജോലിയും ഗവേഷണവും ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും, ഒടുവിൽ അത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അകാല മരണത്തിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചു. 1888-ൽ നടത്തിയ ഒരു ശസ്ത്രക്രിയയ്ക്കിടെ അജ്ഞാതമായ ഒരു രോഗം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പിടിപെട്ടു.[7]അസുഖത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് കുടുംബം ന്യൂയോർക്കിലെ നോർവിച്ചിലേക്ക് റൂത്തിന്റെ മാതൃ മുത്തശ്ശി ഷട്ടക്കുകളുടെ ഫാമിലേക്ക് മാറി.[5]ഒരു വർഷത്തിനുശേഷം ട്രിനിഡാഡിലേക്കുള്ള ഒരു യാത്രയിൽ നിന്ന് ചികിത്സ തേടി പത്തുദിവസം കഴിഞ്ഞ് അദ്ദേഹം മരിച്ചു.[7]
