ശിലാപാളികളിലെ വലിവ് ബലങ്ങളുടെ (Tensional fource) ഫലമായി ശിലാപാളികളിൽ വിള്ളൽ സംഭവിക്കുന്നു. ഈ വിള്ളലുകളിലൂടെ ശിലാഭാഗം ഉയർത്തപ്പെടുകയോ താഴ്ത്തപ്പെടുകയോ ചെയ്യുന്നതിനെയാണ് ഭ്രംശനം അഥവാ ഭൂഭ്രംശം (Fault) എന്നു പറയുന്നത്.
ഭൂമിയുടെ ഭൂവൽക്കത്തിലെ ഫലക ചലനവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ബലങ്ങളാൽ ഇത്തരം ഭ്രംശനങ്ങളുണ്ടാകുന്നുണ്ട്. ഫലകങ്ങളുടെ അതിർത്തികളിലാണ് ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഭ്രംശനങ്ങൾ കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. പ്രവർത്തനനിരതമായ ഭ്രംശനങ്ങളിലെ ചലനങ്ങളിലൂടെയുണ്ടാകുന്ന ഊർജ്ജം ഭൂചലനങ്ങൾക്ക് കാരണമാകുന്നുണ്ട്.
ഒരു ഭ്രംശനത്തിന്റെ ഉപരിതലത്തിൽ ഭ്രംശരേഖ എന്ന പ്രതിഭാസം കാണപ്പെടാം.[1] ഭ്രംശനങ്ങൾ വ്യക്തമായ ഒറ്റ പൊട്ടലായല്ല കാണപ്പെടുന്നതെന്നതിനാൽ ജിയോളജിസ്റ്റുകൾ ഇത്തരം പ്രദേശങ്ങളെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഭ്രംശമേഖല എന്നുപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്.
