ഇന്ത്യൻ ഉപഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തിൽ പ്രചാരത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു കാവ്യാത്മക രീതിയായ ബാരാഹ്മാസ ( "പന്ത്രണ്ട് മാസം") [1][2][3]പ്രധാനമായും ഇന്ത്യൻ നാടോടി പാരമ്പര്യത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഉത്ഭവിച്ചതാണ്.[4] സാധാരണയായി ഇതിലെ പ്രമേയം കാലാനുസൃതവും അനുഷ്ഠാനപരവുമായ സംഭവങ്ങൾ കടന്നുപോകുന്നതിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ കാമുകനേയോ ഭർത്താവിനേയോ ആകാംക്ഷയോടെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന വിരഹിണിയായ ഒരു സ്ത്രീയുടെ വൈകാരികാവസ്ഥയെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയാണ്.[5][6] മാസങ്ങളുടെ പുരോഗതി (ഹിന്ദു ചാന്ദ്ര കലണ്ടർ അനുസരിച്ച്) ഈ വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ ഒരു അടിസ്ഥാന ഘടകമാണ്. എന്നാൽ മാസങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം ബാരഹ് (Hindi: बारह) അല്ലെങ്കിൽ "പന്ത്രണ്ട്" ആയിരിക്കണമെന്നില്ല. നാടോടി പാരമ്പര്യങ്ങളുടെ അതേ തലമുറയിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ചൗമാസ, ഛൈമാസ, അഷ്ടമാസ (യഥാക്രമം നാല്, ആറ്, എട്ട് മാസത്തെ ചക്രങ്ങൾ) തുടങ്ങിയ സമാനമായ കാവ്യരൂപങ്ങളും നിലവിലുണ്ട്. ഉത്ഭവം

പന്ത്രണ്ട്" എന്നർത്ഥം വരുന്ന "ബാരഹ്" മാസം എന്നർത്ഥം വരുന്ന "മാസ്" എന്നീ ഹിന്ദി പദങ്ങൾ ചേർന്നാണ് ബാരാഹ്മാസ എന്ന വാക്ക് ഉത്ഭവിച്ചത്. [10] ബംഗാളിയിലെ ബാറോമാസി പോലെ മറ്റ് ഭാഷകളിലും സമാനപദങ്ങൾ പ്രചാരത്തിലുണ്ട്.[11]
