ഒരു പുരാതന റോമൻ വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രഞ്ജനാണ് ഗലേൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഏലിയസ് ഗലേനസ് (Aelius Galenus) അഥവാ ക്ലോഡിയസ്സ് ഗലേനസ് (Claudius Galenus) (AD 129 – 200/217) (Greek: Γαληνός, Galēnos). ഗ്രീക്ക് വംശജനായ, ഇദ്ദേഹം, പെർഗാമമിലെ ഗലേൻ (Galen of Pergamum ) എന്നാണ് പൊതുവേ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. റോമൻ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ചികിത്സകനായി ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രത്തിന് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സംഭാവനകൾ വിലപ്പെട്ടതാണ്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ പ്രധാനമായും കുരങ്ങുകളിലാണ് നടത്തിയിരുന്നത്. അന്ന് മനുഷ്യരിൽ വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രപരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ നടത്തുന്നത് അനുവദനീയമായിരുന്നില്ല. 1628 ൽ വില്യം ഹാർ‌വേ ഹൃദയവും ഞരമ്പുകളും രക്തം പമ്പു ചെയ്യുന്നതുപോലെയാണെന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തുന്നതു വരെ ഗലേന്റെ പഠനങ്ങളും എഴുത്തുകളുമാണ് ഹൃദയവും, ഞരമ്പുകളുടെയും പഠനത്തിനു ആധാരമായിരുന്നത്. 19 ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലും വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്ര വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ ഗലേന്റെ ചില പഠനങ്ങൾ ആധാരമാക്കിയിരുന്നു. നാഡികളെക്കുറിച്ച് ഗലേൻ വികസിപ്പിച്ചെടുത്ത ചില പഠനങ്ങളും ഇപ്പോഴും വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഒരു നല്ല വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രഞ്ജൻ കൂടാതെ അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു തത്ത്വചിന്തകൻ കൂടിയായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു നല്ല ചികിത്സകൻ ഒരു തത്ത്വശാസ്ത്രഞ്ജൻ കൂടിയാണ് ("That the Best Physician is also a Philosopher") എന്നൊരു കൃതി കൂടി രചിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ,
