ഭൂമിയുടെ പരിണാമത്തിലെ ഒരു കാലഘട്ടമാണ് കാംബ്രിയൻ കാലഘട്ടം. ഇത് ഏകദേശം 541 മുതൽ 485.4 ദശലക്ഷം വർഷം മുമ്പ് ആണെന്ന് കണക്കാക്കുന്നു. പാലസോയിക് കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെയും ഫാനരൊസോയിക് ആദ്യ ദശയായി ഇതിനെ കണക്കാക്കുന്നു[6]. ഇതിനുമുമ്പുള്ള കാലത്തെ എഡിയാകാരൻ സമയം എന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. കാംബ്രിയൻ കാലഘട്ടത്തിനുശേഷമുള്ള കാലഘട്ടത്തെ ഓർഡോവിഷ്യൻ കാലഘട്ടം എന്ന് നാമകരണം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു[7]. ഇതിന്റെ ഉപവിഭാഗങ്ങളെസംബന്ധിച്ച് അവ്യക്തതകളാണൂള്ളത്. ആഡം സെഡ്വിക് ആണ് ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരു കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ ഉപജ്ഞാതാവ [6]
