ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആധുനിക നഗരമായ ചെന്നൈയിൽ ( അന്നത്തെ മദ്രാസ് ) 1644 ൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ച ആദ്യത്തെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് (പിന്നീട് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ്) കോട്ടയാണ് ഫോർട്ട് സെന്റ് ജോർജ് (അല്ലെങ്കിൽ വൈറ്റ് ടൌൺ).[1][2] ഈ കോട്ടയുടെ നിർമ്മാണം കൂടുതൽ കുടിയേറ്റത്തിനും വ്യാപാര പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്കും ഊർജ്ജം നൽകി. യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഇത് ജനവാസമില്ലാത്ത ഒരു സ്ഥലമായിരുന്നു.[3] അതിനാൽ, ഈ പട്ടണം കോട്ടയെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ഒരു നഗരം എന്ന് പറയാൻ സാധ്യമാണ്.[4] നിലവിൽ ഈ കോട്ടയിൽ തമിഴ്നാട് നിയമസഭകളും മറ്റ് ഔദ്യോഗിക കെട്ടിടങ്ങളും സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. തമിഴ് നാട്ടിലെ 163 നോട്ടിഫൈഡ് പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ഈ കോട്ട.[5]
ചരിത്രം
1600 ൽ വ്യാപാരം നടത്തുന്നതിനായി ഇന്ത്യയിൽ വന്ന ഈസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ത്യ കമ്പനി സൂറത്തിലെ ലൈസൻസുള്ള ട്രേഡിംഗ് ആരംഭിച്ചു, ഇത് അവർക്ക് പ്രാരംഭ അടിത്തറ നേടിക്കൊടുത്തു. എന്നിരുന്നാലും സുഗന്ധവ്യഞ്ജനങ്ങളുടെ വ്യാപാരവും വാണിജ്യപരമായ താല്പര്യവും ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുന്നതിനായി മലാക്കാ കടലിടുക്കിന്റെ അടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു തുറമുഖത്തിന്റെ ആവശ്യകത അവർ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു, ചെന്നിരയാർപട്ടണം അഥവാ ചന്നപട്ടണം എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്ന തീരദേശ ഭൂമി വാങ്ങുന്നതിൽ വിജയിച്ചു. അവിടെ കമ്പനി ഒരു തുറമുഖവും ഒരു കോട്ടയും.നിർമ്മാണം തുടങ്ങി. കോട്ട നിർമ്മാണം പടിപ്പടിയായാണ് നടന്നത് പൂർത്തിയാക്കാൻ പതിനാലു കൊല്ലമെടുത്തു.[6] 1644 ഏപ്രിൽ 23 ന് 3000 പൗണ്ട് ചെലവിൽ ഈ കോട്ട പൂർത്തിയായി.[7]
