Purpose

These geoboxes were created:

To provide a means for creating consistently-formatted tables and summarizing information
To improve navigation between articles within closely-related subjects
To maximize the ease of creating and upgrading infoboxes
To improve the ease of transferring information to other language Wikipedias by using standardized, database-like fields

Other guidelines

This general, multi-purpose geobox template duplicates features contained in various other, more specific geography and place infobox templates (like {{Infobox settlement}} for settlements, and {{Infobox protected area}} for protected areas. In general, editors should not change from one to the other without good reason or broad consensus.

Exceptions where broad consensus has been achieved are:

The use of this template for mountains is deprecated. The relevant code has been removed. Use {{Infobox mountain}} instead.
The use of this template for mountain ranges is deprecated. The relevant code has been removed. Use {{Infobox mountain range}} instead.
The use of this template for provinces is deprecated. Use {{Infobox settlement}} instead. The former instances have been replaced.

The last major merge/deletion discussion of this template was held in January 2012, which resulted in no consensus.
