1967 ലാണ് ഓൺലൈൻ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടർ ലൈബ്രറി സെന്ററിർ (ഒ.സി.എൽ.സി.) രൂപീകൃതമായത്,[2] അതേ വർഷം തന്നെ അമേരിക്കൻ ലൈബ്രേറിയനായ ഫ്രഡ് കിൽഗർ വേൾഡ്കാറ്റ് രൂപീകരിച്ചു,[3] എങ്കിലും 1971 ൽ ആണ് ആദ്യമായി വേൾഡ്കാറ്റിൽ ഗ്രന്ഥസൂചികകൾ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിതുടങ്ങിയത്.[4] വേൾഡ്കാറ്റിൽ 2014 നവമ്പറിലെ കണക്കുകളനുസരിച്ച് 330 മില്യണോളം ഗ്രന്ഥസൂചികകൾ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. [5] ഇതാണ് ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഗ്രന്ഥസൂചി ഡാറ്റാബേസ്.
