ഭൂപ്രകൃതി

റോക്കി പർവതനിരകളുടെ അടിവാരത്തിനും, മഹാസമതലത്തിന്റെ (Great Plain) പടിഞ്ഞാറേയറ്റത്തിനും ഇടയ്ക്കുള്ള പ്രദേശത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരമാണിത്. താരതമ്യേന സമതല പ്രദേശമായ ഡെൻവറിൽ റോക്കിനിരകളിലെ 4200 മീ. ലേറെ ഉയരമുള്ള ഹിമാവൃതമായ ചില പർവത ഭാഗങ്ങൾ ദൃശ്യമാണ്. ലോങ്സ് കൊടുമുടി (4348 മീ.), മൗണ്ട് ഈവൻസ് (4350 മീ.) എന്നിവ ഇവയിൽ പ്രാധാന്യമർഹിക്കുന്നു. ഡെൻവർ-ഒരു നഗരദൃശ്യം

കാലാവസ്ഥ

നഗരത്തിന്റെ ഉയരംമൂലം ഇതിന് മൈൽ-ഹൈസിറ്റി (Mile High City) എന്ന പേരുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്. സുഖകരമായ കാലാവസ്ഥയാണ് ഡെൻവറിൽ അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നത്. നഗരത്തിന് പ്രത്യേക പ്രാധാന്യം നേടിക്കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന ഘടകവും സൂര്യപ്രകാശം ധാരാളം നൽകുന്ന ഈ കാലാവസ്ഥയാണ്. ജനുവരിയിൽ 0.6oC ഉം ജൂലായിൽ 22.8oC ഉം ശരാശരി. താപനില ഡെൻവറിലനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നു; ശരാശരി. വാർഷിക വർഷപാതം: 358 മി. മീ.. ഉയർന്ന വേനൽക്കാല ഊഷ്മാവും താഴ്ന്ന ശീതകാല ഊഷ്മാവും കുറഞ്ഞ വാർഷിക വർഷപാതവും ഇവിടത്തെ കാലാവസ്ഥയുടെ പ്രത്യേകതകളാണ്. ഇലപൊഴിയും മരങ്ങളാണ് മുഖ്യ സസ്യജാലം.

വാസസ്ഥലം

ഡെൻവർ നഗരത്തിന്റെ ഭൂരിഭാഗം പ്രദേശങ്ങളും വാസസ്ഥലങ്ങളാണ്. നഗരത്തിലൂടെ ഒഴുകുന്ന സൗത്ത് പ്ലാറ്റ് നദിക്കരയിലാണ് വ്യവസായങ്ങൾ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. നഗരത്തിന്റെ വടക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറു ഭാഗത്ത് ആധുനിക ഹർമ്യങ്ങളും ധനകാര്യ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളും ഹോട്ടലുകളും മറ്റും കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

1960-കളുടെ അവസാനത്തിൽ ഡെൻവറിൽ സ്വകാര്യ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ള ഒരു നിവാസ നിർമാണ പദ്ധതി രൂപംകൊണ്ടു. ന്യൂനപക്ഷ വിഭാഗത്തിന് ചെലവു കുറഞ്ഞ പാർപ്പിടങ്ങൾ നിർമിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ഈ പദ്ധതിയുടെ പ്രധാന ലക്ഷ്യം. ദേശീയ -നഗരഭരണകൂടങ്ങൾ പിന്താങ്ങിയ ഈ സംഘടന സുസ്ഥിരവും വിഭിന്ന മതക്കാർ സഹവർത്തിച്ചു പാർക്കുന്നതുമായ വാസകേന്ദ്രം നിർമിക്കുന്നതിൽ വിജയം കണ്ടെത്തി. ഡെൻവറിന്റെ ഉത്തര-പൂർവ ഭാഗത്തുള്ള ഈ പ്രദേശം പാർക്ക് ഹിൽ (Park Hill) എന്ന പേരിലാണറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. രാജ്യത്തിലെ പ്രമുഖ കെട്ടിട നിർമാണ വ്യസ്ഥകളിലൊന്നായ ഓപ്പൺ ഹൗസിങ് നിയമവും ഈ പദ്ധതിയെ പിന്താങ്ങിയിരുന്നു.

മൊത്ത വ്യാപാരം, ധനകാര്യം, ഗതാഗതം തുടങ്ങിയ മേഖലകളിൽ ഒരു പ്രാദേശിക കേന്ദ്രമായി ഡെൻവർ വർത്തിക്കുന്നു. നഗരത്തിന്റെ സമ്പദ്ഘടനയിൽ മുഖ്യപങ്കു വഹിക്കുവാൻ ഇവിടത്തെ ഉത്പാദന മേഖലയ്ക്കു സാധിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. സമീപ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള കാർഷിക വിഭവസംസ്കരണത്തിനാണ് വ്യവസായങ്ങളിൽ മുൻതൂക്കം. ധാന്യം പൊടിക്കൽ, കരിമ്പു സംസ്കരണം, മീറ്റ് പാക്കിങ് എന്നിവ മുഖ്യ വ്യവസായങ്ങളിൽപ്പെടുന്നു. ഡെൻവറിലും സമീപപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലുമുള്ള മറ്റു വ്യവസായങ്ങളിൽ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടവ യന്ത്രസാമഗ്രികൾ, ലോഹസാധനങ്ങൾ, റബർ ഉത്പ്പന്നങ്ങൾ, സൂക്ഷ്മോപകരണങ്ങൾ, ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ, മിസൈലുകൾ, പെട്രോളിയം ഉത്പന്നങ്ങൾ, വസ്ത്രം, തുകൽ എന്നിവയുടെ നിർമാണമാണ്. 1950 കളിൽ വികസനമാരംഭിച്ചതും അന്തർ വൻകരാ മിസൈലുകൾ(Inter continental missiles) ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്നതുമായ എയ്റോസ്പേസ് വ്യവസായത്തെ ഡെൻവറിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രമുഖ വ്യവസായമെന്നു പറയാം. 1960-കളിൽ ഈ വ്യവസായത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങൾ ഗവേഷണവും മാൻ-ഇൻ-സ്പേസ് (Man-in-space) പദ്ധതിയുമായിരുന്നു. അനുദിനം വികസിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നതും ദേശീയ തലത്തിൽ പ്രാധാന്യമർഹിക്കുന്നതുമായ രംഗമാണ് ഡെൻവറിലെ വ്യവസായ മേഖല. കൽക്കരി, പെട്രോളിയം, പ്രകൃതി വാതകം, എണ്ണ, യൂറേനിയം പോലുള്ള ഇന്ധന വിഭവങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ഖനനം ചെയ്യുന്ന കമ്പനികളുടെ ഒരു പ്രധാന കേന്ദ്രം കൂടിയാണ് ഡെൻവർ. അച്ചടി-പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണം, ഇൻഷുറൻസ്, വിനോദസഞ്ചാരം തുടങ്ങിയവയും പ്രധാന വ്യവസായങ്ങൾ തന്നെ.

1950-കളിൽ മന്ദഗതിയിലായിരുന്ന ഡെൻവറിലെ ജനസംഖ്യാവർധന 60-കളായപ്പോഴേക്കും കുറഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങി. നഗരപ്രാന്തങ്ങളിലേക്കുള്ള ജനങ്ങളുടെ കുടിയേറ്റമായിരുന്നു ഇതിനു മുഖ്യകാരണം. നഗരത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേക സ്ഥാനം മൂലം രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ പശ്ചിമപ്രദേശത്തെ ഒരു പ്രധാന ഗതാഗത കേന്ദ്രമായി ഡെൻവർ വർത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു പ്രധാന ട്രക്കിങ് കേന്ദ്രവും വ്യോമഗതാഗത കേന്ദ്രവും കൂടിയാണ് ഡെൻവർ. ഇവിടത്തെ സ്റ്റേപ്പിൾടൺ (Stapleton) അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വിമാനത്താവളം മുനിസിപ്പൽ ഭരണത്തിൻ കീഴിലാണ് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നത്.

കാപ്പിറ്റോൾ മന്ദിരത്തെ കൂടാതെ സിവിക് സെന്റർ, ആർട്ട് മ്യൂസിയം, പബ്ലിക് ലൈബ്രറി, ഗ്രീക്ക് മാതൃകയിലുള്ള ഔട്ട്ഡോർ ആംഫി തിയെറ്റർ, ലാറിമെർ സ്ക്വയർ, ദ് ഡെൻവർ സെന്റർ ഫോർ ദ് പെർഫോമിങ് ആർട്ട് തുടങ്ങിയവ ഡെൻവറിലെ പ്രധാന ആകർഷണ കേന്ദ്രങ്ങളാണ്. ധാരാളം ലൈബ്രറികളും മ്യൂസിയങ്ങളും നഗരത്തിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. കൊളറാഡോ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് മ്യൂസിയം, നാച്വറൽ ഹിസ്റ്ററി മ്യൂസിയം, ആർട്ട് മ്യൂസിയം എന്നിവ എണ്ണപ്പെട്ട കലാസങ്കേതങ്ങളാണ്. കൂടാതെ, ധാരാളം ഉദ്യാനങ്ങളും വിനോദകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളും നഗരത്തിൽ കാണാം. സിറ്റി പാർക്ക്, ഡെൻവർ ബൊട്ടാണിക്കൽ ഗാർഡൻസ് എന്നിവയാണ് ഇതിൽ പ്രധാനമായവ. ദ് പാർക്ക് ഒഫ് ദ് റെഡ് റോക്സ്, ലുക്ക് ഔട്ട് മൗണ്ടൻ പാർക്ക് തുടങ്ങിയ മികച്ച പാർക്കുകളും ഡെൻവറിലുണ്ട്. ഇവിടത്തെ എലിച് ഉദ്യാന(Elitch garden)ത്തിലുള്ള സമ്മർ തിയെറ്റർ പ്രശസ്തിയാർജിച്ചതാണ്. സിംഫണി ഓർക്കെസ്ട്രയുടെ ധാരാളം തിയെറ്ററുകൾ ഡെൻവറിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. തിയെറ്ററുകളും തിയെറ്റർ കോംപ്ലക്സുകളും അടങ്ങിയ ആധുനിക മന്ദിരങ്ങളും നഗരത്തിലങ്ങോളമിങ്ങോളമുണ്ട്. വലുപ്പത്തിലും ആകർഷണീയതയിലും പ്രമുഖ സ്ഥാനത്തു നിൽക്കുന്ന സിറ്റി പാർക്കിനുള്ളിൽ അനേകം തടാകങ്ങളുണ്ട്. മൃഗശാല, മ്യൂസിയം ഒഫ് നാച്വറൽ ഹിസ്റ്ററി തുടങ്ങിയവ ഈ പാർക്കിനുള്ളിലാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.

കൊളറാഡോയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനം

കൊളറാഡോസ്റ്റേറ്റ് ക്യാപിറ്റോൾ

1858-ൽ ചെറിക്രീകിലാരംഭിച്ച സ്വർണ പര്യവേഷണത്താവളങ്ങളിലൊന്നായിട്ടായിരുന്നു ഡെൻവറിന്റെ തുടക്കം. കാൻസാസ് മേഖലാ ഗവർണറായിരുന്ന ജെയിംസ്. ഡബ്ല്യൂ. ഡെൻവറിന്റെ പേരിൽ നിന്നാണ് നഗരനാമം ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞത്. 1861-ൽ രൂപംകൊ കൊളറാഡോ ടെറിറ്ററിയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനം ഗോൾഡൻ ആയിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും 1867-ൽ ഈ പദവി ഡെൻവറിനു ലഭിച്ചു. 1870 വരെ ഭാഗികമായി ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട സ്ഥിതിയിലായിരുന്ന ഈ നഗരം ഡെൻവർ-പസിഫിക് റെയിൽപ്പാതയുടെ പണിപൂർത്തിയായതോടെ മറ്റു നഗരങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. 1881-ലെ ഹിതപരിശോധന ഡെൻവറിന്റെ സംസ്ഥാന തലസ്ഥാനമെന്ന പദവി ഒന്നുകൂടി ഉറപ്പിച്ചു.

1870-കളിൽ റെയിൽവേയുടെ വികസനവും റോക്കി പർവതനിരകളിലെ വെള്ളി നിക്ഷേപത്തിന്റെ കണ്ടെത്തലും ഡെൻവറിന്റെ ദ്രുതവികാസത്തിനു വഴിതെളിച്ചു. പെട്ടെന്നു തന്നെ സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ പ്രധാന ഖനന-വിതരണ കേന്ദ്രമായി നഗരത്തിനു മാറാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞതിന്റെ കാരണവും ഇതുതന്നെയായിരുന്നു.

1904-ൽ സ്വയംഭരണം നേടിയെടുത്ത ഡെൻവറിൽ 1916 ആയപ്പോഴേക്കും മേയർ-കൗൺസിൽ മാതൃകയിലുള്ള ഭരണകൂടം നിലവിൽവന്നു. 1927-ൽ 10. കി.മീ. ദൈർഘ്യമുള്ള മോഫത്ത് ടണ്ണലി (Moffat Tannel)ന്റെ പണി പൂർത്തിയായതോടെ നേരിട്ടുള്ള അന്തർ വൻകരാ റെയിൽപ്പാതയിൽ ഡെൻവർ സ്ഥാനം നേടി. ഒരു പ്രധാന ഖനന-കന്നുകാലി വളർത്തൽ-കാർഷിക-വിനോദ സഞ്ചാരകേന്ദ്രമായി ഉയർന്ന ഡെൻവർ അതോടെ ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ പ്രമുഖ സാമ്പത്തിക കേന്ദ്രമായി വികസിച്ചു. 1920-കളിലും 30-കളിലും ഡെൻവറിന്റെ വളർച്ചാ നിരക്കിൽ കുറവു വന്നെങ്കിലും ഒന്നും രണ്ടും ലോകയുദ്ധങ്ങൾക്കു ശേഷം സ്ഥിതി ഏറെ മെച്ചപ്പെട്ടു. 1950-കളിലും 1970-കളിലും വൻതോതിലുണ്ടായ നഗരപ്രാന്ത വികസനം നഗരത്തേക്കാൾ കൂടുതൽ ജനസാന്ദ്രത പ്രാന്തപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലുണ്ടാകുന്നതിന് ഇടവരുത്തി. 1976-ൽ മഞ്ഞുകാല ഒളിമ്പിക്സിന്റെ വേദിയായി ഡെൻവർ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും ഡെൻവർ നിവാസികളുടെ എതിർപ്പുമൂലം ഇത് റദ്ദാക്കി.
