ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ പ്രമുഖനായ ഒരു പ്രകൃതി ചരിത്രകാരനും ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ ശുദ്ധജലമൽസ്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ഗവേഷണം നടത്തുന്നയാളും ആണ് റോഹൻ പെത്തിയാഗോഡ (Rohan Pethiyagoda), 2010 -ൽ പേര് റോഹൻ പെറ്റ് എന്നാക്കിമാറ്റുകയുണ്ടായി.

ജീവിതം, സംഭാവനകൾ[തിരുത്തുക]

1955 - നവംബർ 19 -ന് കൊളംബോയിൽ ജനിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം ലണ്ടനിൽ ഉപരിപഠനം നടത്തി. ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പിൽ ബയോമെഡിക്കൽ എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗിൽ എഞ്ചിനീയറായി ചേർന്ന് 1982-87 കാലത്ത് അതിന്റെ ഡിറക്ടർ ആയിമാറി. 1984 -ൽ അതിനൊപ്പം റ്റന്നെ ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ ജലവിഭവബോർഡിന്റെ ചെയർമാനുമായി നിയമിതനായി. ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ ശുദ്ധജലമൽസ്യങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി പഠിക്കാനായി സർക്കാർ ജോലി 1987 -ൽ രാജിവച്ച[1] അദ്ദേഹം 1990 -ൽ തന്റെ ആദ്യപുസ്തകം പുറത്തിറക്കി, ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ ശുദ്ധജലമൽസ്യങ്ങൾ (Freshwater fishes of Sri Lanka).[2] രാജ്യത്തെ ശുദ്ധജലമൽസ്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് നിറയെ ചിത്രങ്ങളുമായി തയ്യാറാക്കിയ അതിമനോഹരമായ ഒരു ഗ്രന്ഥമായിരുന്നു അത്.[3]

തന്റെ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ നിന്നും ലഭിച്ച ലാഭം കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം Wildlife Heritage Trust Archived 2017-10-02 at the Wayback Machine. (WHT) എന്നൊരു ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ ഉണ്ടാക്കുകയും ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ ജൈവവൈവിദ്ധ്യത്തെപ്പറ്റി കൂടുതലായി പഠിക്കുവാനും തുടങ്ങി. പ്രകൃതിശാസ്ത്രപുസ്തകങ്ങൾ ഇറക്കാനും അതിന്റെ വരുമാനം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് കൂടുതൽ പര്യവേഷണങ്ങളും ഗവേഷണങ്ങളും നടത്താനുള്ള ഒരു ബിസിനസ് രീതിയായിരുന്നു അത്. 1991നും 2012 നും ഇടയിൽ ഈ ട്രസ്റ്റ് ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലും സിംഹളയിലുമായി വളരെയധികം പ്രചാരം സിദ്ധിച്ച A field guide to the birds of Sri Lanka[4] അടക്കം 40 പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ പുറത്തിറക്കുകയും ലോകബാങ്ക്/ഹോളണ്ട് സഹൽകരണ പദ്ധതിപ്രകാരം അവ സിംഹളത്തിലേക്ക് വിവർത്തനം ചെയ്യുകയും 5000 സ്കൂൾ ലൈബ്രറികളിലേക്ക് സൗജന്യമായി നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തു.[5][6][7][8] അങ്ങനെ ശ്രീലങ്കയിൽ ആദ്യമായി ശാസ്ത്ര-ജൈവവൈവിധ്യപുസ്തകങ്ങൾ നാട്ടുഭാഷയിൽ യുവാക്കളിലേക്ക് എത്തി.[9]

കണ്ടുപിടിത്തങ്ങൾ[തിരുത്തുക]

WHT -യിലെ സഹപ്രവർത്തകർക്ക് ഒപ്പം പെത്തിയാഗോഡ നൂറോളം മൽസ്യങ്ങളെയും[2][10] ഉഭയജീവികളെയും[8][11] പല്ലിവർഗ്ഗജീവികളെയും[12][13] കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചു. അതുകൂടാതെ 43 ശുദ്ധജലഞണ്ടുകളെയും അവർ കണ്ടെത്തി.[14] കഴിഞ്ഞ 130 വർഷത്തിനിടയിൽ ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ 19 ഉഭയജീവി സ്പീഷിസുകൾക്ക് വംശനാശം സംഭവിച്ചെന്നും അവർ കണ്ടെത്തി. ലോകത്തെവിടെയെങ്കിലും നിന്ന് ഇത്രയും വലിയ വംശനാശ വിവരം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടില്ല.[11][15]

അംഗീകാരങ്ങൾ[തിരുത്തുക]

രാജ്യത്തെ മലങ്കാടുകൾ ഭീകരമായി അപ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുന്നതിനെ നേരിടാൻ 1998 -ൽ ഉപേക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ട ചായത്തോട്ടങ്ങൾ പ്രകൃതിദത്തവനങ്ങളാക്കുന്ന ഒരു പദ്ധതിക്ക് പെത്തിയാഗോഡ തുടക്കമിട്ടു.[16] ഇക്കാര്യത്തിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് Rolex Awards for Enterprise ലഭിച്ചു.[1] ശ്രീലങ്കൻ സർക്കാരിലും ഐ യു സി എന്നിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ഉന്നതപദവികൾ ആണ് ഉള്ളത്. 60 ഗവേഷണപ്രബന്ധങ്ങൾ കൂടാതെ ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ പ്രകൃതിചരിത്രത്തെപ്പറ്റിയുമെല്ലാം അദ്ദേഹം ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങൾ രചിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ആസ്ത്രേലിയയിലെ മ്യൂസിയത്തിൽ ഗവേഷണം നടത്തുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം ഏഷ്യയിലെ ശുദ്ധജലമൽസ്യങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ആനുകാലികമായ സൂ‌ടാക്സയുടെ എഡിറ്റർ ആണ്.

പിന്നീട്[തിരുത്തുക]

മൽസ്യങ്ങളും ഓന്തുകളും എട്ടുകാലികളും തുമ്പികളും അടക്കം പല പുതിയ സ്പീഷിസുകൾക്കും പെത്തിയാഗോഡയുടെ പേര് നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.[17][18][19][20][21] 2012 -ൽ അദ്ദേഹവും സംഘവും പുതുതായി കണ്ടുപിടിച്ച ഒരു മൽസ്യജനുസിന് റിച്ചാർഡ് ഡോക്കിൻസിന്റെ ബഹുമാനാർത്ഥം ഡോക്കിൻസിയ എന്നു പേരിടുകയുണ്ടായി .തന്റെ എഴുത്തുകളിലൂടെ മതങ്ങൾ വിഭാവനം ചെയ്യുന്നതിലും എത്രമടങ്ങ് സുന്ദമാണ് ലോകം എന്നു കാണിച്ചുതന്നതിനാണ് ഡോക്കിൻസിയ എന്നു നാമകരണം നടത്തിയതെന്നു പെത്തിയാഗോഡ പറഞ്ഞു.[22]
