ആദിമക്രൈസ്തവർ റോമൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലെ ബഹുദൈവവിശ്വാസികളെ പരാമർശിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന പദമാണ് പഗനിസം (Paganism). (from classical Latin pāgānus "rural, rustic", later "civilian"). ഇത് ഒന്നുകിൽ മിലിറ്റസ് ക്രിസ്റ്റിയല്ലാത്ത ("milites Christi") (soldiers of Christ) ഗ്രാമീണ, പ്രവിശ്യാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലുള്ള ക്രൈസ്തവ ജനസംഖ്യയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു.[1][2]ഒരേ ഗ്രൂപ്പിനുള്ള ക്രിസ്തീയ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളിലെ ഇതര പദങ്ങൾ യവനൻ, അവിശ്വാസി, വിഗ്രഹാരാധകർ എന്നിവയായിരുന്നു.[3]ആചാരപരമായ സമർപ്പണം പുരാതന ഗ്രീക്കോ-റോമൻ മതത്തിന്റെ അവിഭാജ്യ ഘടകമായിരുന്നു.[4]ഒരു വ്യക്തി പുറജാതീയനാണോ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനിയാണോ എന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനയായി ഇത് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.[4]
പഗനിസം യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ബഹുദൈവ വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ നിന്ദ്യവും അവഹേളനപരവുമായതും അതിന്റെ അപകർഷതയെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതുമായ പദമായിരുന്നു.[5]പഗനിസം "കർഷകരുടെ മതം" എന്നും സൂചിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.[5][6]മധ്യകാലഘട്ടത്തിലും അതിനുശേഷവും, പഗനിസം എന്ന പദം പരിചയമില്ലാത്ത ഏതെങ്കിലും മതത്തിൽ പ്രയോഗിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതിലൂടെ ഈ പദം തെറ്റായ ദൈവവിശ്വാസ സങ്കൽപ്പമാകുന്നു.[7][8]ഇന്ന് നിലവിലുള്ള മിക്ക ആധുനിക പുറജാതീയ മതങ്ങളും- ആധുനിക പഗനിസം, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ നിയോപാഗനിസം[9][10]അദ്വൈതവാദി, ബഹുദേവതാരാധകർ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പ്രകൃതി ശക്തികളെ ആരാധിക്കുന്നവർ, ചിലർ ഏകദൈവവിശ്വാസികൾ എന്നിവരിലൂടെ ഒരു ലോകവീക്ഷണം പ്രകടമാകുന്നു.[11]
