മാരിടൈം വിമൻസ് ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ ടെമ്പറൻസ് യൂണിയൻ (ഡബ്ല്യുസിടിയു), നാഷണൽ കൗൺസിൽ ഓഫ് വിമൻ ഓഫ് കാനഡ, ലോക്കൽ കൗൺസിൽ ഓഫ് വിമൻ ഓഫ് ഹാലിഫാക്സ് എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നൽകിയ കനേഡിയൻ സർഫാജിസ്റ്റും എഴുത്തുകാരിയുമായിരുന്നു എഡിത്ത് ജെസ്സി ആർച്ചിബാൾഡ് (ജീവിതകാലം: 5 ഏപ്രിൽ 1854 - 11 മെയ് 1936) പലതരം സാമൂഹ്യപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾക്ക് ജോർജ്ജ് അഞ്ചാമൻ രാജാവ് അവരെ "ലേഡി ഓഫ് ഗ്രേസ്" എന്ന് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നു. [1] 1997 ൽ കാനഡ സർക്കാർ ദേശീയ ചരിത്ര പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ള വ്യക്തിയായി അവരെ നിയമിച്ചു.[1][2]

ആദ്യകാലജീവിതം[തിരുത്തുക]

ന്യൂഫൗണ്ട് ലാൻഡിലെ സെന്റ് ജോൺസിൽ കാതറിൻ എലിസബത്ത് (റിച്ചാർഡ്സൺ) ആർച്ചിബാൾഡ്, സർ എഡ്വേർഡ് മോർട്ടിമർ ആർച്ചിബാൾഡ് എന്നിവരുടെ മകളായി ജനിച്ച എഡിത്ത് ജെസ്സി ആർച്ചിബാൾഡ് പൊതുസേവന ചരിത്രമുള്ള ഒരു പ്രമുഖ കുടുംബത്തിൽ പെട്ടയാളായിരുന്നു.[1][3] ലണ്ടനിലും ന്യൂയോർക്ക് നഗരത്തിലും അവർക്ക് ആദ്യകാല വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ലഭിച്ചു. അവിടെ അവരുടെ പിതാവ് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കോൺസൽ ജനറൽ ആയിരുന്നു.[3][4]

ഇരുപതാമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ രണ്ടാമത്തെ കസിൻ മൈനിംഗ് എഞ്ചിനീയറായ നോവ സ്കോട്ടിയയിലെ കൗ ബേയിൽ ഗൗറി കൽക്കരി ഖനന ഉടമയായിരുന്ന ചാൾസ് എ. ആർച്ചിബാൾഡിനെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു. [5] 1893-ൽ അദ്ദേഹം കൊളിയറി വിറ്റ് ഹാലിഫാക്സിലെ ബാങ്ക് ഓഫ് നോവ സ്കോട്ടിയയുടെ പ്രസിഡന്റും ഡയറക്ടറുമായി ചുമതലയേറ്റു.[1][2][3][5]അവർക്ക് നാല് മക്കളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു - സൂസൻ ജോർജീന (ജോർജി എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു), തോമസ്, ചാൾസ്, എഡ്വേർഡ് - ഹാലിഫാക്സിലേക്ക് പോകുന്നതിനുമുമ്പ് പോർട്ട് മോറിയനിലെ "സീവ്യൂ" എന്ന മാളികയിൽ അവർ താമസിച്ചു.[3][5]
