ജോൺ കാസ്സിൻ
ജോൺ കാസ്സിൻ (September 6, 1813 – January 10, 1869) അമെരിക്കക്കാരനായ പക്ഷിശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞായിരുന്നു. പെൻസില്വാനിയായിലെ ബിസിനസ്സുകാരനും ഫിലാഡെല്ഫിയ അക്കാഡമി ഓഫ് നാചുരൽ സയൻസസിന്റെ ക്യൂറേറ്ററും ആയിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം അനേകം പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ രചിക്കുകയും അനേകം പക്ഷികളുടെ സ്പീഷിസുകൾ നിർവ്വചിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.
1813 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 6നു ഫിലാഡെൽഫിയായിലെ ഡെലാവെയർ കൗണ്ടിയിലെ അപ്പർ പ്രൊവിഡൻസ് ടൗൺഷിപ്പിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം ജനിച്ചത്. [1]
വർഗ്ഗീകരണശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ വളരെ സൂക്ഷ്മതയും സാമർഥ്യവുമുള്ള കാസ്സിൻ, 198 പുതിയ പക്ഷികൾക്ക് പേരുനൽകി. Cassin's auklet, Cassin's kingbird, Cassin's vireo, Cassin's sparrow, and Cassin's finch തുടങ്ങിയ നിരവധി പക്ഷികളുടെ പേരിലൂടെ അദ്ദേഹം ഇന്നും ഓർമ്മിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ഒരു പ്രാണിയായ Magicicada cassini അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
Birds of California, Synopsis of the Birds of North America; Ornithology of the United States Exploring Expedition; Ornithology of the Japan Expedition; Ornithology of Gillis's Astronomical Expedition to Chile; and chapters on raptorial birds and waders in Ornithology of the Pacific Railroad Explorations and Surveys എന്നിവ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ രചനകളാണ്. പക്ഷെ, Illustrations of the Birds of California, Texas, Oregon, British and Russian America (1853–56) എന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ഒരു വാല്യം മാത്രമേ ഇറങ്ങിയിട്ടുള്ളു.
1869ൽ ആർസനിക് വിഷബാധമൂലമാണ് മരണമടഞ്ഞത്. പക്ഷികളുടെ തൊലി അർസനിക്കിലാണ് അന്ന് സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ബ്രൗൺ സർവ്വകലാശലയുടെ നചുറൽ ഹിസ്റ്ററി മ്യൂസിയത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ 4300 പക്ഷികളുടെ സ്പെസിമെൻ സൂക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. [1][2][3]
