കറുത്തവർഗക്കാരുടെ അവകാശങ്ങൾ സംരക്ഷിക്കാൻ രൂപീകരിച്ച എൻഎഎസിപി(നാഷനൽ അസോസിയേഷൻ ഫോർ ദി അഡ്‌വാൻസ്‌മെന്റ് ഓഫ് കളേഡ് പീപ്പിൾ)യിൽ ദീർഘകാല അധ്യക്ഷനായിരുന്നു^[4].

1965ൽ ജോർജിയ നിയമസഭയിലേക്ക് ആദ്യമായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ വെള്ളക്കാരായ അംഗങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സഭയിലിരിക്കാൻ അനുവദിച്ചില്ല. 1966ൽ സുപ്രീംകോടതി വിധിയിലൂടെയാണ് സഭയിൽ ഇരിപ്പടം ലഭിച്ചത്.തുടർന്ന് ആറുവട്ടം തുടർച്ചയായി ജോർജിയ സഭയിലേക്കു തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

വിയറ്റ്‌നാം യുദ്ധ വിരുദ്ധ സമരങ്ങൾക്കും ശക്തമായ നേതൃത്വം നൽകി. ന്യൂനപക്ഷ അവകാശങ്ങൾക്കു വേണ്ടി എന്നും സജീവമായി നിലകൊണ്ടു. എഴുത്തുകാരനും പ്രഭാഷകനുമായ അദ്ദേഹം ടിവി ചർച്ചകളിലും സ്ഥിരമായി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു^[5]
