രാഷ്ട്രീയം, തത്വചിന്ത, ശാസ്ത്രം, ഗണിതം, സംഗീതം[7] തുടങ്ങിയ മേഖലകളിൽ ശ്രദ്ധേയ സംഭാവനകളർപ്പിച്ച ഒരു ബഹുമുഖപ്രതിഭയായിരുന്നു അബൂനസ്‌ർ അൽ ഫാറാബി (അറബി: أبو نصر محمد الفارابي). പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ നാടുകളിൽ അൽഫാറാബിയസ് എന്ന പേരിൽ ഇദ്ദേഹം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു[8] (c. 872[1] - ഡിസംബർ 14, 950/951[3])

ഇസ്‌ലാമിക തത്വചിന്ത, നിയമങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയിൽ പ്രഗൽഭനായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം നിരവധി ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങൾ രചിച്ചു. ഒന്നാം അധ്യാപകനായ അരിസ്റ്റോട്ടിലിന് ശേഷമുള്ള രണ്ടാമത്തെ അധ്യാപകൻ എന്നാണ് മുസ്‌ലിം തത്വചിന്തകർക്കിടയിൽ അൽ ഫാറാബി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്[9].

ഗ്രീക്ക് തത്വചിന്തയുടെ പല ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളും അവലംബിച്ച് അൽ ഫാറാബി തയ്യാറാക്കിയ വിവരണങ്ങളും ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളും വഴി അവയുടെ സംരക്ഷണം എന്ന പ്രക്രിയ നടപ്പിലാക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

അവിസെന്ന, മൈമോനിഡെസ് തുടങ്ങിയ നിരവധി പ്രമുഖ തത്ത്വചിന്തകരെ സ്വാധീനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. തന്റെ കൃതികളിലൂടെ അദ്ദേഹം പടിഞ്ഞാറും കിഴക്കും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.

അൽ ഫാറാബിയുടെ ജീവിതത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് വളരെ കുറഞ്ഞ വിവരങ്ങൾ മാത്രമേ ലഭ്യമായിട്ടുള്ളൂ. ജീവചരിത്രം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തപ്പെടാതിരുന്നതാണ് ഇതിന് കാരണം. തത്വചിന്തയുടെ ചരിത്രം വിവരിക്കുന്ന ഭാഗത്ത് അൽ ഫാറാബി തന്നെ ആത്മകഥാപരമായ ചില പരാമർശങ്ങൾ നടത്തുന്നതാണ് ജീവചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഒരു സ്രോതസ്സ്. അൽ മസ്ഊദി, ഇബ്ൻ അൽ നാദിം, ഇബ്ൻ ഹൗഖൽ എന്നിവരുടെ രചനകളിലും ചില പരാമർശങ്ങൾ ലഭ്യമാണ്. സൈദ് അൽ അന്തലൂസി അൽ ഫാറാബിയുടെ ഒരു ജീവ്ചരിത്രം ലഭിച്ചതായി കാണാം. 12-13 നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളിലെ അറബ് ജീവചരിത്രകാരന്മാരുടെ രചനകളിൽ വസ്തുതകളേക്കാറെ കഥകൾ നിറഞ്ഞതായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു[2].
